Sierra game kings??

I've used gamekings in .270, .308, .323, .338 and .375 and I find they are a great bullet. Very accurate, reasonably priced, and they hold up well at impact velocities under 2900 fps.

I have specifically used the .277 dia 150gr bullet you mentioned in my .270 win for years and it has killed moose and black bear very well.
 
I found in my .270 win they where fine out 300 yards but any farther they where no good, I would choose a bullet with a higher B.C. like hornadys SST are a lot more accurate at longer ranges. Bullet to bullet weight is more consistant.

I've only ever used this version of the gameking...in a .30-06 and it is very accurate and deadly. Quite a few deer, 1 bull moose, 1 calf moose with them. Keep SGK's at moderate velocities and they are great hunting bullets.
 
Boattail or no boattail?

Accuracy isn't defined by boattail or its absence. Ballistic coefficient might be just a bit lower sometimes.
From what I see regularly, in the case of .303 British Lee-Enfield's rifling, it takes flatbased bullets better and shoots very well with Sierra Pro-Hunter. Perhaps it's due to the flat base upsetting just enough to give better obturation.

That's a fallacy. Boat tails don't do anything for hunting accuracy at hunting ranges. LONG range competition, and especially when the bullet is subsonic - yes. Hunting - no accuracy difference, but the prohunter stands up better when it hits bone. I have loads using prohunters in .308 and 7mm that shoot sub moa consistantly. A quick look at my notes doesn't show any noticeably smaller groups with Game Kings or Prohunters.

It has been my experience that prohunters are a tougher hunting bullet. Granted, my experience is only roughly a dozen animals between both bullets, but the difference was quite dramatic to my eyes. Game Kings tend to separate when they hit bone. Prohunters don't. It's another debate entirely whether jacket separation is inherently bad, and I'm not going there :). I'm just saying the Prohunter is tougher.

The first bullet I ever handloaded was a pro hunter. When I had used them all up I could'nt get any more so I got gamekings. The flat based pro hunter had a slight edge in accuracy at the ranges I was shooting(up to 200 yds in softwood forest). Boat tails are popular because people think they're better and they're easier to seat when loading.
SGK's are a good affordable bullet, I might even pick some up for my .308 load development for this year.
 
I stand corrected on the boat tail/no boat tail point-- thank you. I was under that impression because I've seen a move towards the boat tails. I even noticed much to my surprise that the bullet I pulled out of a corrosive, 7.62 x 39 cartridge was a boat tail, so I figured if even the Soviet union used them they had to be better.
I haven't actually noticed a difference between the two in any of my calibers that I load to be honest, but I don't shoot any further than 300 yards at any time.
 
SGK's. Well, alot of guys online will slag them and chant jacket seperation back and forth. I've never experianced this from them, not at conventional velocities. I used the .224 55 grn hpbt(very fragible round on varmints) .257 120 grn HPBT, it was really effective in a 257 wby. I used the 130 grain SGK in a 270 win, 140grn in a 7mm rem and 150 grn prohunter in a 308, no issues on WT deer. They are not Noslers, I love noslers, but there are 100 in the box not 50, for the same money. Hornady on the other hand, makes a beautifully accurate bullet the interlock, but I've seen most of them seperate. Even if all they hit was a 1" pine target board.
 
Shot 2 WT bucks with a 160 GK in a 7mm Mag, both broadside at long range (400+) both shoulder shot. The exit side looked like I'd hit them with a tank. DRT, but messy. Since switched to TTSX's and Accubonds. Both seem to be a bit more accurate and less destructive. Really, though, hard to beat a Partition for whatever's showing up first. Damned good bullet design.

That's about right. If you had hit them in the same spot but at 50 yds it would have made hamburger out of the front quarters and probably wouldn't have exited at all.
The SGK is a very useful bullet at under 3000fps, preferrably 2850 and under. An excellent all-rounder for 30-06, .308, and the like, but a bit on the frangible side for higher velocities.
 
I have never seen a BT be more accurate in an average hunting rifle.
& I figure if you need the little extra downrange a BT will provide your likely to far away to be taking the shot...IMHO of course :redface:

I've been anxious to try 100gn Gamekings in my 250s but the deer just aren't willing to co-operate just yet.
 
In my experience they shoot very accurately and have always killed everything I have shot with them. No problems.
