1-get a manual
2-read it
3-I'll assume bolt action and suggest you'll be ~44gn of Varget.
4-when you ask why Varget? I'll say, read your manual.

Load data for any 168gr bullets at the starting load will work. At starting loads COAL is pretty lenient. You'd be pretty safe using load data for 165gr or 170gr bullets as well assuming you are using starting loads or even starting loads - 10% if you are really worried.

Sierra edition V, 5th printing lists 22 powders, I'll pick 5;
Benchmark 36.9-41.4
IMR4895 38.2-41.3
H4895 37.3-39.9
Varget 38.7-43.5
IMR4064 37.8-43.4
*1 bonus* Accuracy load, RE-15 -42.0gr -2600fps

If you want a specific, let me know. I use Varget at ~2800fps

IMO, any 168gr bullet of like/kind/quality will load the same, or very close to.
 
I was at a benchrest shoots in Ottawa many years ago and everyone shooting .308 win at 100 , 200 & 300 with 168gr SMK only powders they where using was

H 4895 39.3-42.9 gr
IMR 4895 39 to 42 gr a couple shooters where using imr 4064
some shooters on line, Walt Berger, Clyde Hart,Bob Hart,Jack Deming, #### Brownell and others
 
The old stand by load for 300m ISU shooting was 39 gr of 3031. You don't need a super fast/hot load for shooting 300m and 3X20 rounds of string shooting.
The 168 SMK were designed in the 1960 for shooting 300m ISU.
With a faster load these bullets will work out to 800 yards. You might get lucky with them at 900 but they are crap at 1000 yards.
 
Thanks. I wasn't sure of their limitations, other than reading they are not considered suitable for 1000 yards. I'll save them for the shorter shoots. The ability to buy bullets around here is really limited. Hard to economically just buy a box and try them when you have to mail order everything.
