I'm wondering how many competitive shooters are using SMK bullets? If so where do you get them?

A lot of guys are talking about Bergers but are the Sierras just as good consistency wise?

Berger VDLs and Hybrids have really high BCs but they are really hard to source locally (at a reasonable price). $39.99 at wholesale, no way im paying that


Im on the fence between buying 80gr .224 bullets in an SMK or a Berger VLD.

contact Jerry and order JLK bullets..........berger and sierra are sliding fast.................
 
i've never used them but from what I understand

less fouling = more rounds between cleaning
possibly extended barrel life

the moly has less friction than copper so you get slightly less pressure and velocity with a given load

someone correct me if im wrong

Alex I have seen 80gr Matck Kings shoot two 5 shot groups in a row at 300y measure .600", I have seen a 223 with 80gr Bergers shoot .520" 5 shot group. The MK are very accurate and I would think they would shoot as well as Bergers. on any given day.
But where the MK fail to the Bergers are at long range wind drift, The Match King 80gr have a BC of just over 400 while the Bergers have .454 BC
and the 90gr 224 bergers have a BC of .551 which are way way better than the 80grs at long distances
 
In my opinion the SMK is easier to get to shoot well day after day.

I tried the.224 80gr SMKs, Bergers and JLKs and the JLKs did not shoot well for me at all. I had a hard time deciding between the Berg and SMK until I went to the 100 yard range one day and fired them side by side. In the end (with my rifle) the SMKs were more accurate so I stuck with them ever since.

You can split nickels over the BC difference and I just felt that accuracy was what matters most and have never doubted that I did the right thing.

I think that the longer JLK and Berger are just finicky to load but you might shoot them well if you have a tight neck chamber and turn your necks.

If you have a factory chamber you will probably be best off with the SMK.
 
These days I mostly shoot Bergers but I've shot a lot of SMKs and I continue to think highly of them (the biggest match I ever won was with boring old medium-performance Sierras).

Relative to the other premium bullet makers, Sierras tend to be lower performance (lower bc) and rougher in quality (uniformity of tips etc). Having said that, they are *very* accurate, and dead-certain-*reliable* bullets. *If* there is an accuracy disadvantage to using Sierras, it would only be in Benchrest or in the very highest echelons of F-Class that this would be relevant.

Very important things to influence your choice of bullet:
- it should be reliably available to you
- it should be _easy_ to get it to shoot accurately. Seek out wisdom of others on this; avoid the 'fussy' bullets and choose the 'easy' ones

High price hurts, but should take second place to the above two concerns.

The Berger 80.5 or Berger 82 would probably be better choices than the Berger 80 VLD (it can be pretty fussy)

The Sierra 80s are perfectly fine too; don't rule them out.
