I'm considering upgrading from my Norinco NP30 1911, I really liked firing my friend's Sig p226 .40 cal but I would like to stick to .45acp because of my ammo supply and reloading equipment.

Other then cosmetics what are the pros and cons between the Sig 1911 and the p220?

Thanks

The 1911 is a great range gun it may be softer shooting and can be more accurate the triggers can be tuned to your liking. It's an awesome gun and highly customizable, the p220 is likely the best combat pistol ever Made. Hk USp or HK45 may replace it in time. It is highly sought after as a combat pistol for many reasons. It is not ammo fussy, and round nose or hp of any kind feed ultra reliably, the trigger requires a mans finger to pull it, typically this is no issue as they are used in life and death situations where a stiffer triggers a must to avoid ad. The decocking feature and exposed hammer with are all advantageous features on a combat pistol as they allow the user to move from a loaded pistol to safe pistol in a few easy steps requiring only gross motor skills not fine motor skills. There are no surprises with the p220. It is a mighty fine pistol. For the range 1911 is extremely hard to beat, in combat it has misfired more than any other pistol in existence due to the heal release not being fully compressed when firing, this is its biggest downfall especially if you have to shoot with your weak hand. You can shoot the sig upside down left or right handed limp wrested or whatever and with any ammo and will fire. So if you are in Canada and can only shoot on the range 1911 hands down, if you need it for you know, whatever else the p220 is very hard to beat.

For the price you can't beat the P220. I have both 1911's and a P220ST and although the 1911 is a great platform it can be tempermental. My 220 has never failed me and will happily feed any ammo. The weight of the ST makes it very easy to shoot and I have never had an FTF or FTE with it. I wish I could say that about my 1911's and although I love the 1911 I have to say that I have more confidence in the P220. It has never been " modded" or "tuned" and worked great right out of the box so that's something to consider when looking at prices.

How do you like the feel of your Norinco?
For me, this is the biggest issue, as I have yet to find a 1911 that I actually enjoyed firing due to the grip angle. I believe this adds to muzzle flip.
The 220 on the other hand is a dream to shoot and is truely a "push" as opposed to the snap.
Now, maybe because I've never had much range time with the various 1911's I've used the issue is me.
If you can, get some time behind the 220 before making the decision.

I have owned USGI, STI and Colt 1911 pistols. All gone now. I started with a P220 in 9mm. Grabbed a German P220 in .45ACP. No transitional hiccups, shoots like a +P9mm. Sweet operation and you don't require a M.Eng. Degree for a complete teardown. A very accurate pistol out of the box.

I don't have much to compare it too the only other 1911 I have fire is a Springfield. My Norinco is great for the money factory rounds function fine, it is a little picky with reloads. Couple factors at play, being a double stack 1911 and being a rookie reloader. It was have about a 5% FTC rate at short OAL reloads, I went though 9 mags at 1.260" OAL and have no problems at all.

When I bought my first pistol 10 years ago I shot dozens of guns and had narrowed it down to the same two choices as you. I wanted to get the 1911 more than the Sig but couldn't deny the P220 felt better in my hand and I could shoot it more accurately. I also really like the de-cocking lever instead of an external safety.

If you haven't shot them both do that first. They are both such excellent handguns that there are going to be valid pros and cons on both sides. You have to shoot both to really know what works for you.

Sig 220 Trigger...

My Sig 220 trigger seems to be almost identical to my Sig 226 trigger. Of course the first double action pull will be long, it's much better than my HK USP's dbl action pull!

There are Sig 220's with the SRT trigger, which is a huge upgrade. You could always have a smith work the base 220's trigger group. I have never shot a 1911 in .45 so I can't compare. I had a 1911 in .22 and liked it...

What I like about the Sig 220:

Single stack grip (surprisingly feels more ergonomic-even for my huge hands)
Perfect Balance (CZ97 I had was really top heavy)
Easy recoiling (CZ97 I used to have had a really "off-balance" recoil that I couldn't get used to
My German 220 is gorgeous! Never a FTE FTF, 100%. Fit/finish is impeccable.

A little grease and lint in the photo, I just unboxed it there... tag is still on!

If it hasn't been mentioned weight is a big thing. The 1911 is significantly heavier, which I like as it assists in recoil reduction.

Not always true. My 220 is a steel slide, alloy frame and it has lighter recoil than the huge CZ97b chunk of steel that I used to own... How do you explain that? Better ergonomics and balance can beat weight advantages. The pistol was top heavy... I have an HK USP 40 with very light recoil, as it has 2 recoil springs to achieve this. HK might be the best polymer gun out there. HK45 is a holy grail.

I have read that 1911's are much better in recoil reduction, due to weight, ergo and balance. I eventually want to buy a nice 1911 if I can't find an HK45...

The Sig 220 is listed as lighter than the Sig 226 by the way. I was surprised to read this.

I should make myself more clear on my original post, the 1911 option I was looking at was a Sig 1911xo that I can get new for $870 or the p220 for the same price.

I was looking for info on the Sig 1911 XO and couldn't find much on CGN. A search online for american reviews might be in order. This is the cheapest Sig 1911 available. I love my Sig 220. Just shot it a few minutes ago, it was the life of the party (all 3 of us loved it).

If you were looking at the same place (Cabela's) 1911 XO is on backorder.

I've owned both Sig 1911, 220 and a few 226's. Only have the 1911 now. I liked the 226 a lot more than 220, just fit my hand better. Sig 1911 (mine is Carry stainless) is my favorite of the 3.

Mine 220 was all steel and is heavier than a 4.25" 1911 I have now.
