sig 226 or 1911

Sig 226 is about some of the best 9mm out there, it isn't my cup of tea but it is a great gun to shoot, anyhow STI also make a Ranger II in 9mm as a commander size and a Trojan 9mm as a full size, they are both great gun. I do get a sig 226 as if it is a first gu for you.

A newbie-ish kind of question. Would a Sig P226 9MM make for a gun for someone wanting to start out in some shooting sport like IDPA or similar?

Im looking into a new gun specifically for this sport and a 9mm seems like the best choice.

Hmm..the better choice will be a CZ Shadow. I am sure a lot of fellow gunnutz member can give you more informations.

Try to check them out in person first. The grip size on the 1911 and the 226 are completely different. The 226 is much beefier than the 1911 so depending on your hands you will find one fits better than the other in your case.

I enjoy shooting a 1911 more than a P226, but for some reason I shoot a P226 more accurately (even though the grip is a bit too big, especially in DA mode). When it comes to maintenance, there's no question, the Sig is much easier and nicer to clean.

This is a tough one. I love both Sigs and 1911s, however, if you're just starting out and want to shoot IDPA, grab the Sig. The ammo is cheaper and the pistol is very friendly to the first time shooter. Also, support for the SIG is much better for a first timer at this point.

Get the 226 in 9mm and the 1911 in .45.

That would be the classic way to do things for sure.

buy the SIG if you are not short on cash.

WHA? ? ? Considering that the vast majority of 1911's cost as much or more than a Sig I think you got it backwards! :D In truth it would obviously depend on which 1911 he's after. However the STI Trojan in 9mm is pretty much on par with the Sig for cost.

For IDPA you'll want to figure out which class you want to start in. For some that don't feel comfortable drawing in a cocked and locked condition that means you'll be wanting a class where the first shot is a double action pull for that extra measure of comfort. That leaves out full time single actions like the 1911.

I tried both, liked the 1911 .45 much better (the Sig just felt too light). Still, 9 mm is muich more practical for a first gun than a .45.

Ended up buying Beretta 92FS - 9mm because of its heft (which I liked).

i also like the "heft" in a gun. my first handgun was a 44mag desert eagle, now that had some massive HEFT, i had to fight with racking the slide the first few times, man i miss it!

Thinking about getting sig 226 or 1911 in 9mm. Need some option.

Easy, if you want a cheaper gun to shoot but more expensive to buy buy the sig in 9mm only buy the 1911 in 45, there are over 100 different manufactures of 1911. If you are wanting to shoot ISPC buy the cz shadow more accurate than the sig. The sig is a sig and if your hands are large you will not finder a nicer feeling gun to shoot, period, if your hands are small then the 1911 is for you, narrower grip. Don't buy it in 9 though buy it in 45. its a 45 calibre piece. I don't own a 1911, own several sigs.

I would wager a bet and challenge anyone to *prove* me wrong, Sig226 is the BEST 9mm on the market and the 1911 is the BEST .45ACP there is. Can't go wrong with either and getting one will soon lead to acquiring both.
