I just bought a sig 226 and from my understanding the first shot should be DA and the rest SA. My sig always starts in SA (which I prefer) and not in DA. Basically everytime the slide goes back it cocks the hammer. Any input would be great. Don't know if its the gun or me but they only way i can get it DA is to manually decock it after i chamber a round.

You are doing it correct, once you pull the slide back the gun is in the cocked position. You need to decock it if you are using a holster. Otherwise you can target shoot from the SA without decocking it.

Yes, you have to decock to get the DA pull. The purpose is to act as a safety allowing holstered carry with a round in the chamber.

And for GOD'S SAKE always decock before holstering! It's not a matter of if you will shoot yourself in the leg but rather when. I love my P226:)

Gebus Pal. ALWAYS decock befor holstering, it its important to you to have one in the chamber. It should be DA first pull, because you should be drawing from a holster instead of having it lying around with the hammer cocked.

Ditto on the manual. Decocking is one of the most basic operating procedures for a Sig, not knowing anything about it, when you "own" the gun, is kind of creepy!
