Looking to purchase in 9mm or .40. New to handguns and don't know a lot. Is the SIG worth the extra money? Going into Law enforcement and guns are Standard 9mm. I like the safety features on the XDM although I don't know much mechanically. Any help as to which way I should go would be great thanks

Sig is excellent - but pricey. Springfields have a good rep as well, just depends which ever fits your hand best and your budget.

I did a post asking about purchasing my first handgun, ended up shooting beretta 92fs, sig p226, sig p229, some 1911s, 9s 40s 45s and I ended up purchasing a sig p226r because I like the weight, the look, the feel, and the fact that they have a great reputation as a duty gun (if it works for them, it'll work for me)

if this is your job, practice & train with something similar to or exactly the same as your duty gun.

Well I still have a few years before going in, at least two. So basically its just training all around on handguns since I have never really used them. Also I just enjoy shooting and you can never have to much practice. I'm leaning to the XD right now just because of price wise and I will most likely be purchasing more in the future. Thanks for the help though. Any major mechanical problems with either of the guns?

doesn't the LE use the M&P 40 right now? at least around here they do. i'd be more inclined to learn on / with a Glock due to price, availability, and durability. everyone needs a Glock, a 1911, and a 357 revolver, in any order. and a 22 of some kind, up front if possible.

If those are your two choices do not even consider the XD.

Current SIGs are overpriced considering their well-documented slide on QC over the last 5 years or so. But XDs have had issues from day one. If you are heading in to LE, why not have a look around and see just how many big LE or military outfits have issued each of these? In particular to their tactical units?

Hint: get the SIG. Nobody issues the XD. (well, a couple of outfits do...for example the US department of Agriculture. Now those guys get trigger time...or not)

But a potentially better option would be either a 9mm Glock or an M&P. Find out what your likely issue options would be...train with one of those.

Alright guess it would make more sense to buy a gun I will be using in the future. Thanks for the help guys

always does! that way you'll program your actions and grip and whatnot to work best with whatever you actually have to use. have a plan, stan!

if it were just for fun, then you could be a bit more lax and varied...
