I have a good friend whos firearms knowledge and accessable information is limitied, but budget, however, is not. He has recently taken to the "Sig 3000" rifle and I have absolutley no information about it (I am usually his go-to guy when it comes to purchasing guns). Basically what I am wondering is if there is anywhere in calgary, or canada for that matter this gun can be viewed & purchased? Or if this rifle is even available at all in canada or does it belong to some goofy 12.X designation license catagory?

The SIG-Sauer SSG 3000 rifle is a joint product of the SIG Arms (switzerland) and J.P.Sauer und sohn (Germany) companies, based on Sauer 200STR target rifle.

SSG 3000 is a bolt action, magazine fed rifle. The SSG 3000 features modular design with removable barrel/receiver group and trigger/magazine group. The bolt of the SSG 3000 has 6 lugs and locks directly into the barrel. The barrel is cold hammer forged and has muzzle brake / flash suppressor. The triggers available in single or two-staged configurations, both ajustable for weight and lenght of pull. The original stocks were made from laminated wood and are fully ajustable, with ajustable cheek pieces; Recent SSG 3000 rifles, offered in the USA by SIGARMS, feature polymer McMillan stocks, that are also fully ajustable. SSG 3000 has no iron (back-up) sights. Standart telescope is a Hendsoldt 1.5-6x42mm scope, but a STANAG-compliant sight bases also available as an option.

Wolverine Supplies was able to get these.

I have actually handled and shot one about 5 years ago. They certainly have a very high look-cool factor, and they are a smooth action, but there is nothing about them to justify the more than 5 grand the rifle costs.

Accuracy was good, but inferior to a custom and they only come in .308. You could build two rifles that would be nearly identical in looks and more accurate for the same money,

The Tikka T3 tactical has everything the SSG has at less than half the price, or even the Sako TRG for a couple grand less...

I found nothing about them except their looks that was really exceptional, and even that is a matter of taste.

Well, look at it this way, maybe not everyone is content with the usual match barrel screwed into a Remington action, slapped into a McMillan stock and paired with a Jewel trigger, which is what most customs out there are...

Different strokes for different folks, right? And, after seeing the price tag on that rifle, I'm about to have one.

They're hard to find; check who the importer is, as I don't think Wolverine imports them directly (I could be wrong). If it's F.N. Sports/R.Nicholls, tell your friend to abandon all hope.

Match barrels on Remingtons are only customIZED Remingtons, not custom rifles.

Stiller, Surgeon, PGW and many others make actions that have custom tolarances - the basis of which would still put you well under the price tag of this. Once again, just because a rifle costs an outrageous amount of money does NOT make it a PRECISION rifle.

Maybe we're kind of splitting hairs here, but why is it just a cusomized Remington if only a single component (the action) is from that company?

As we saw in the "What's your definition of a Precision rifle?" thread, precision is a term relative to the application of said rifle. According to the manual of the SSG:
The SAUER SSG 3000 precision rifle is a manual
type repeating rifle developed to meet the specific
requirements of law-enforcement and military
sharp-shooters
[emphasis added].
According to this review, groups averaged 3/8", so I'd say that's precision enough for the rifle's intended application.

That being said, I agree that it's overpriced, but that's most likely due to supply/demand issues, as well as the fact that, being European made, you're paying for things like import taxes, warranties, the builder's union fees, etc... But the guy who buys it will probably have something a little different than what's usually seen in North American precision shooting circles, and that might be worth some $$$ too.

So, yeah, throwing money at a rifle (unlike a stripper) won't necessarily make it perform better... Relative to a something with all-custom parts, anyway.

If your friend is insistent on a "law enforcement or military" precision rifle off the rack and doesn't want to do the homework to build to his own custom specs he should give serious consideration to a standard spec PGW Coyote.

For about the same or less coin than a SSG 3000 your friend could have his hands on a "out of the box" precision rifle that will shot sub .5 MOA all day long and a pile of spare mags.

To boot he'll have a Canadian made product so no screwing around with importing in teh first place and potential export/reimport hassles if warranty work is required.
