Sig 522

In addition, thanks to the efforts of Questar (and indirectly, a ruling from the RCMP) we have benefited from 10-round pistol magazine capacity in .223 - again, something that would not have been possible with different legislation. These are just a few notable examples of how the laws have worked for us; it's not all completely one-sided.

The rcmp aren't nearly so accommodating as you might think over the whole magazine issue.

Do tell...

For example, is there such a beast as a 10/30 pistol mag, appropriately marked?

The body markings are apparently the critical point as evidenced by the Beretta Storm magazine issue. Yet there is resistance to allowing the 10/30 AR pistol mag. But what about the long bodied Glock mags? They can be sold in a 10/30 format. I fail to see any sincere attempt at consistency here as in many other areas the rcmp are involved in evaluating.

There is more, but all in the fullness of time ...

There should be a simple test for 'variants'...remove some key components (bolt, trigger assy) from the firearms in question (522), provide the tech that made the decision with the parent firearms (550), tell him to assemble a functioning firearm. Should be easy if it's a variant.

Unless I'm totally misunderstanding the use of the term...

In the firearms act they don't even explain the term variant so they can decide what a variant is... and they have, just based upon looks.

var·i·ant
   /ˈvɛəriənt/[vair-ee-uhnt]

–adjective
1.tending to change or alter; exhibiting variety or diversity; varying: variant shades of color.
2.not agreeing or conforming; differing, esp. from something of the same general kind.
3.not definitive, as a version of part of a text; different; alternative: a variant reading.
4.not universally accepted.

–noun
5. a person or thing that varies.
6. a different spelling, pronunciation, or form of the same word: “Vehemency” is a variant of “vehemence.”

The whole variant clause needs to be struck from the FA and each firearm judged on its own merrit.

What do you mean each firearm "judged on its own merit." If we do that, once the Libs are back in power, count on the RCMP giving advice to the cabinet to issue a prohib OIC for anything that looks tactical.

The whole Firearms Act should be struck, its garbage. No firearm should have to be "judged" to be legal, criminal behavior is what should be judged.

It's not in the Firearms Act, it's secondary legislation, i.e. regulations. The one minor thing they could do with regard to the regulations is to standardize the mag capacities at ten rounds for pistols and centrefire semi-auto/full-autos. Simple change, easy to do, not likely to create a big argument and then I might finally understand the damn regs.

Steve, I like the standard 10 round magazine across the board idea. With the cost of ammo who can afford to fire off 30 round centrefire mags anyways?
