Sig 550 Black Special !?

Do you have one?Magazines can be had quite cheaply with the Dominion ones - they work exceptionally well.
There really isn't much in the way of aftermarket, but what is out there is pretty much on par cost-wise with any other group of guns out there, same with parts.
The Black Special is 8lb. 10oz. and a similarly equipped AR is pretty close at 8lbs. 6oz. and wears its weight pretty much in the same spots...

It is a little heavy towards the front, the gas block (which is much larger than an AR15 front sight post) and the upper gas tube + piston does put its weight a little further forwards, although its not that bad. One nice thing about the swiss arms, is the barrel is heavy contour under the handguards and light at the tip, so it doesn't add unnecessary weight to the front.

And all the purse swinging about calling them "Sig 550's" is a little extreme... Is it technically correct? no. But then again how many guys call their various AR15's "an M4" or a full length one an "M16"? As far as the sigs go, the upper is nearly identical to the 550, the only bid differences are the trigger group in the lower (based off of the SIG 540). Even my good friend that has a Black Special (and is very specific about his firearms terminology) doesn't care if its called a 550.
Everybody knew what the guy meant, a little "Usually we tend to refer to them as the specific model, either Black Special, target, CQB, carbine etc.. instead of 550, so it doesn't give the liberals anything to give us a hard time about!" would be a lot better to attract and KEEP new guys here instead of instantly dogpiling them on it!

Clearly, you are not aware that us "Oblivious LEO"s walk, and surf the internet, amongst you. Some "Oblivious LEO"s are even CGN members on lunch break, in between calls for service, who occasionally swing by P&D. By the way, P&D is owned by a retired-EPS "Oblivious LEO" and staffed by another retired "Oblivious LEO". While that "young kid," was explaining to me about the "Sig 550", I was listening to you, standing to my left, mention that you were a CGN'er to the other clerk. I also noted you paying attention to my conversation. I made other observations as well, but that's mostly just police work.
Regardless, that young kid, is a new employee at P&D and was providing the best customer service he could, based on the knowledge and experience he has. What good would it do to correct him on a minor issue of firearms semantics, except to my service my own ego.
By the way, I went back and bought that "Sig 550" Black Special Target after my shift was over. Please don't tell anyone... it's prohibited you know.

I'm just poking fun. I know you love it cuz I love mine. Its a gun thats hard to not love. I don't care its not .5 MOA I don't care that you can make an AR more accurate for cheap and I don't care its not a "real" 550. Its non restricted, semi auto, looks damn cool and shoots damn nice. I can hit ice crem pails at 200m with a very cheap red dot on mine. I love it.

I've seen the Dominion Arms magazines crack after 1 day on a rifle course... then again a real Swiss Arms mag developed a crack after 2 days so that's not saying much (dropping on concrete is not healthy for the design, it seems). But the real ones are $90 a pop for the 5/30's so...
The BS/CG's are definitely front heavier than an AR, even a Colt HBAR. I'd rather have a heavier gun with better balance than a light, front-heavy gun.
And for accessories... have you shopped for spare parts? I haven't seen an AR-15 that has a $600 railed non-FF handguard (wait wait... maybe KAC... but that's KAC). Diopter rear sights are $250 or so. Barrels are about $750. I can keep going.
Just stop going to the bar for a few weeks and you will the extra cash...
People really don't like to pay for quality these days, or rare items, yet they have no problem spending money on a plastic piece of crap from China, not that everything from China is crap either, but really..
To me there is no reason why anyone realy can't afford one top of the line rifle in their gun safe, yes it is a big hit but after 4 months or so the cost is a distant memory!
I don't own a Swiss arms yet but eventually i will at some point if permitted!
well anyway, I have one black special mounted with c-79, 5.56 elcan scope and find it good, I do targets but it is mostly for yotes and fox hunting. the scope is for fast acquisition of targets but not much reliable...after all it goes with the rest of our military equipment. beyong 600 feet I feel better with my m-10 bas-k .308

No, it is not a heavy contour under the handguards - pull them off and have a look for yourself.
Do you own a Colt H-bar? I do (two in fact) - and can tell you it is about a full pound heavier than a full length Swiss Arms...and it's weight is all up front.
I have a number of spare parts including bolts, butt stocks, pistons a few barrels. The barrels were $450 - that includes the obvious stuff like the integral flash suppressor and not so obvious like the gas block and front sight. Pretty decent pricing compared to equivalantly priced and quality AR stuff.
The only railed fore ends I know of are B&T - which do not produce cheap or inexpensive stuff for any type of firearm - so be sure you are comparing apples to apples in your cost comparison.

I could be mistaken about this, I've only seen my friends gun field stripped once or twice, but I was fairly certain the barrel was heavier under the handguards than in front of the gas block
(or at least was tapered from the rear to front quite a bit)

Although it is not a heavy profile barrel it is indeed slightly tapered.

There seem to be quite a few 20" non-res black specials, a few 17's and 9" cqb's (although I'm not aware if they're marketed as a black special... never owned one) but not many 13's.

I was supposed to go shoot my Black Special Target yesterday for the first time... But someone bailed on me so we didn't end up going... Can't wait to shoot it though! I kicked myself for about 2 years for not buying one when I had the chance, and bought an AR instead. Now that I have one I don't think I'll ever sell it. (well maybe if someone offers me a ton of cash )
