Word is there's a few guys out there with 556 lowers on their SAN's.. Aside from trunion relief, any issues with the swap? How about AR mags? Specifically LAR mags. How's the fit/function of the US made lower vs the Swiss (aside from Alum vs steel).

Looking for 1st-hand knowledge.

Thanks,

-UPDATE-

I seem to recall a few mods were required to fit the 550 lower. My fear would be what mods would be required to the upper, and if that would cause problems, both legal and functional.

If you look at the last thread about this. There are no other issues other than the trunion needs to be releived or you have to notch your AR mags.

The only AR mags that work with no issues are factory Colt mags and Pmags, they are tappered/narrower at the front feed lips and seat fully without the trunion relief.

All other AR mags that I have seen are square at the front and will not seat at all without the trunion relief OR 10 seconds on the grinder to give the mag the relief at the front, then they work perfectlly.

I've got one of these combinations... once the trunion relief is done there are a couple of other small areas to relieve and everything then fits beautifully and the magazines work quite nicely.

We've tested a variety of magazines (COLT, CPRoducts, OKAY, PMAG's, LAR-15 ten round magazines, etc. with no issues).

It's going up for auction shortly and we'll have pictures for anyone who is interested... probably next week.

Any example pictures of this Frankensteinish monstrocity? If only to make me want it for some freakish reason :D

All we need is to convince Swiss Arms to make a PE90 pistol.

SIG SAUER makes a pistol version of their 556.

Be interested in seeing the relief work in those pictures.

I think it's a done deal then. Can't wait.

The gun is now listed on the auction site: GunAuction .ca

There's a few pictures there including 1 that shows some of the modifications that were required...

She's perfect now... I'm taking this rifle to the grave with me. It's nice using LAR mags in everything, especially in non-res rifles. The SIG 556 lower mates up tighter than the 550 lower. It's super solid and built well. Mags drop clear, and the AR pattern magwell/mag release is much more familiar to my hands. Add to that a magpul M93 and she's ready for anything.

Range trip in the AM.
