I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet. I just saw on the SiGARMS site they will have a US made variant of the 550. Cool things about it include:

16" barrel
Accepts AR mags
Weighs about 1 pound less
integrated picatinny rails
Collapsible butt stock.

All this for $1300 US!!!

i think the search is a little flakey, but the 556 was introduced just prior to SHOT SHOW, and recieved a lot of coverage on here around that time....

tootall, who was at the shot show, wrote about it in his shot show coverage report....

Yes, I did originally post details on the above thread, but as there was some concern about the whole "variant" issue, and would such talk cause other currently NON-restricted rifles to be reclassed as prohibs, the last few posts, including one of mine were deleted.

I later wrote an entire article on my SHOT show adventure, and had a paragraph on the new Sig. This is what I wrote:

Next, I visited the Sig Arms (http://sigarms.com/ ) booth to see the new 556 rifle. I previously posted some details about this fine rifle on another thread on CGN, but several posts have been deleted, due to concerns over whether it is a new rifle, or a “variant” of a previously restricted gun. I won’t say anything harmful to the cause, just mention a few facts. It is hoped that Sig will start shipping them by mid year. They are planning to introduce a 20” barrel soon. As the recoil spring is above the bolt carrier, rather than behind it, as in the AR-15, it is possible to make a side folder version, and it is coming. And finally, yes a .308 (7.62x51mm) version is planned! In fact, a prototype is being tested right now. They guessed it might be ready at the end of the year. My guess would be just in time for SHOT 2007.
