I recently picked up a brand new 100% triple serial marked German P239 over Easter weekend.

Today I finally got a chance to take it out to the range and noticed some abnormalities after the first 40 rounds.

As I was cleaning up, I found a series of gouges closer to the muzzle revealing bare metal on the top and under sides of the barrel. I ran my finger nail over it and it was evident something was missing. Shortly after, I found a few blued flakes deposited on the barrel grease which i strongly believe came off from the barrel...

At this point, I stopped shooting and took the pistol over to the gunsmith for inspection. He pointed out the gouges were left by the section of the slide which is responsible for canting the barrel up/down as the slide goes back. He does not believe this is an issue and that I should continue shooting this pistol to finish off the breaking in process.

So... have the germans finally made something thats too tight? I'd love to hear everyone's opinion. There is clearly excessive metal colliding and I'd hate for something to crack down the road.

One thing to add, after the 40 rounds the pistol already has the "Sig Smile" marks on the underside of the barrel. Based on my person experience with other sigs and research, this should indicate its broken in. Is it really that tight and accelerating the wear?

Note: This is not my barrel, just a photo i found online to show "Sig Smile"

Here are the photos as requested! (Please check links to High Res for a closer look)

As you can see in the first image (bottom side of barrel), there is significant "sig smiling" after just 40 rounds. We can consider this as normal breaking in however there are areas where its has worn down to bare metal such as where the smiling starts and the fine line 1/3 ways down from the muzzle. This is my main concern for the gouging because it feels like theres a chunk missing if when i run my finger nail over it. This is not uniform with the usual smooth sig smiling im used to seeing after a proper break in.

The same gouging can be said about the top side of the barrel. The fine line 1/3 ways down actually forms a groove around the barrel.

Thanks for the photos. In my opinion, it does seem odd for that amount of wear just after 40 rounds... I presume you oiled it properly correct? I'm stumped... Did the machining leave any burrs on the metal?

I'm going to take a look at my new sig P226 with comparable about of rounds and see how it looks.

Has there been any malfunctions?

Yeah! Before going to the range today, I cleaned the gun and applied tons of rigs grease.

I inspected the pistol for burrs and theres nothing out of the ordinary.

Nope! No malfunctions!

In my experience with sigs, this amount of wear is normal for a pistol with a few thousand rounds down the pipe... not 40... :/

I looked at mine it has wear but not as significant as your... If I were you this is what I would do: Use the gun, if you begin to encounter problems seek warranty assistance from where you bought it. At this stage, it doesn't look like a huge problem. It still has the Sig name and reputation behind it so don't worry about losing resale value. Let us know if any problems persist.
