Sig Cross rifle pics and a few words

Mine failed in the snow. It is still one of my favourite rifles but the bolt/folder race way is a perfect channel for water/snow into the trigger mec. And the exposed striker also allows water to get into the bolt with ease. And before anyone says lube problems. I have used many.

On the last day of deer season we went from 11” of fluffy snow and -12 to plus 2 and then at sunset -7 on the stalk into the area snow got on everything I do my best to wipe it off.

At last light a small 4 point came out and when I pressed the trigger the sound was click. And I watched the striker barely move at a snails pace. Not enough energy to mark the primer. I tried to run the bolt but thought I was going to snap off the handle.

So I stood up and said hey buddy it’s your day and the young buck just stayed put.
Last light and flashlight I did the walk of shame to the truck. I could get the mag out but had a live round in the chamber. I started the truck and used my exhaust to thaw it out. And clear it.

My buddy has the same rifle and we are trying to come up with a fix.

3D print a striker cover? And maybe a piece of tape to cover the raceway when the stock is not folded? The tape would tear away running the bolt ?

I just noticed this same problem this year. Snow was filling the channel and I constantly was wiping it. Never got the chance that day to see if it would have a problem firing, was more concerned with it icing up and not being able to chamber a round.
 
Thanks for the heads up on the snow issue. I'll make a waterproof cloth cover to slip over the bolt area with some sort of attachment so it won't get lost while hiking. Shouldn't take more than an hour to work it out with paper and tape to make a pattern and make the actual thing in coated cordura.

I have a Remington 700, in .308 with a 20" heavy barrel, HS Precision stock wearing a Vortex VIPER PST 5-25x50 FFP. I hate the palm swells on the stock and the lack of magazine capabilities so instead of fixing that I'm ready to move into the 21st century. I am looking for a rifle that could do target shooting out to 600m and could serve as a deer rifle as well. (I also have a LPVO i could stick on it)

Would the sig cross in .308 with 16" be a good replacement for my Remington? I'm located in Ontario so most of our hunting is shorter distances.
 
I am really impressed with most aspects of my Cross, in .308...but that channel is not one of my favourite features either. I had it out a couple times this winter, looking for a coyote to "blood" it, and watching that little canal filling with snow was even more irritating than the frigidly cold metal of the stock.

I'm experimenting with making the cold stock more comfortable with tape, or M-Lok covers, maybe the Sig handguard cover when it comes out. Not much to be done about the other issue.
 
Found this stretchy camo tape (available in a bunch of colours from the same vendor) on eBay last month. It's not 'sticky' in terms of sticking to metal, but it sticks to itself quite nicely. Trying it on my Sig Cross, I like it. Almost no weight to it, and it should do well enough for keeping my hands from touching bare metal on the forend.
