Field stripping my 229 after coming home from the range yesterday I noticed that the firing pin is "stuck" in the forward position. The "safety lock" is able to spring up and down as normal. The "firing pin bolt" has never been removed on this gun. Removing the firing pin bolt is one option, but I want to know if there is something obvious I am missing here. It didn't malfunction at the range at all (actually it has never had any malfunctions), I just noticed this after the gun got home. I'm probably going to take it to a gunsmith rather than trying to do anything myself, but I would like to hear what ideas you guys have. People with SIGs with the stainless milled slides (which means that there are just five parts potentially involvefd here: firing pin bolt, firing pin, firing pin spring, safety lock, safety lock spring), do you clean the firing pin periodically? I have not done that, and the gun has been shot quite alot starting in August 2007. It seems that everything is fitted together so tight you should really be messing around with cleaning it... but maybe I am wrong.

my HK USP did this when the pin broke,...after neglecting to clean it for approx. 5000rds.

Thanks for the tips. I ordered a new recoil spring, firing pin, firing pin spring, and firing pin bar. I'm going to take it to Dlask and have him install the new pin once the parts come in next week. I don't thinkt he pin is broken, but it is time for an overhaul here. I figured I may as well nip this in the bud and make sure the gun is good to go for at least another 5,000 rounds. The 229 is such a great gun I have been shooting it an ton, and other people want to shoot it too. I am estimating it is already at 6,400 round since last summer and it is time to replace some of the springs. The recoil spring is supposed to be replaced after 5,000 rounds (some people say 3,000). It's weird because the gun was feeling just beautifully broken in recently (it has always felt awesome, but it was starting to feel like your favorite pair of shoes or something), and then it got into this "stuck" thing.

Anyway, it will be back in action soon. Until then I'm still happy to be getting used to my new HK P2000.
