sig mosquito cycling problems

If it is an older Mosquito, check for slide cracking. My slide cracked on the left side at the very back. The crack extended 1" forward and made the gun malfunction like it was brand new again. Crack is very fine and tough to see, try rocking the slide side to side in the rear to check for this. If it is cracked, should be 2-3 years to get repaired by R. Nicolls as they need to hand fit a new slide on it and they have no parts in stock. I was told to expect the pistol back by 2012. Worst purchase ever...

I fixed it for you.

If it wasn't for the superfluous parts, meaning the magazine disconnector and the slide-mounted safety, the Mosquito could have been a nice first pistol.

The magazine disconector doesn't bother me as the pistol is a rimfire and shouldn't be dry fired anyways, plus it has a decocker so I see no point to pulling the trigger without a mag. And the safety is out of the way.
So I like it! :)

I did file off the slide release though (just leaving a little nub) as it extrudes too much and interfered with proper grip.

Oh yeah, and another thing. Earlier model Mosquitos were quite notorious for having all kinds of problems. With later itirations (made over the last couple of years) the problems were worked out of the pistol. A bit of research with google using the key word "serial" might give you a better idea. The serial on mine starts with "A06" so at least everything from then-later is a safe bet.

Many things may be problematic:

Overlubing
Cheap ammunition
Dirty gun (And 'Insert spiritual leader here' knows 22LR can crap a gun interior)
cheap ammunition is often lead, lead leaves a barrel quite dirty.. gotta love scrubbing.. barrel leading sux!
Etc

So yeah the gun might be picky, expecially if it's brand new pistol. Sigs are knows to be tight when new, even if the mosquito isn't really a sig...

Other 22LR pistols (ruger, butchmark, etc...) aren't really better, problem is the cheap ammunition imo.

Ammunition

As relayed many times it is the ammunition, use high velocity ammo until maybe 2000 rounds or more and then try the cheaper stuff. I shoot one semi-regularily that now takes any (federal bulk in the 525 bx) ammo with little to no issues whereas when it was brand new this thing drove me crazy. These guns are great looking and sturdy, you will have a great time with it.

The only reasons for Mosquitos to not work properly, is bad ammo. PERIOD

They are good, but there are some many kinds and brands of .22lr out there, some need the hammer to hit it 3 times to go off, it's the owner's responsability to find the right ammo for his gun.

Not true. At first mine had all kinds of issues, but after being broken in, its shoots everything i feed it,

So dont blame the ammo :)

I have a 60's vintage Browning which shoots pretty much anything, including filthy Winchester Xpert. My Ruger was also fine out of the box.I find it strange that a company like SIG,which produces otherwise great firearms, cant produce a 22 pistol which works right out of the box.The concept of needing to shoot hundreds of rounds before the gun starts to work isnt really acceptable.Perhaps theres a reason why there always seems to be Mosquitoes for sale on the EE!

I totally agree with this, It is not an excuse of using cheap ammo. that said any high velocity ammo should work right out the box. Why CZ and Ruger can work right out the box and not the sig. Funny thing is the mosquito come with two recoil springs which means the design cannot cover or handle different power ammo. If Sig put a statment on the box state that this gun was designed for CCI Mini Mag only then I will keep my mouth shut.

I had no problem with mine using Remington Thunder bolt with the softer spring until recently.. I tried heavier spring with Rem Yellowjackets, still have same problem.. I've tried to polish ramp still no deal.... I'm fed up!!! Gun has fired more than 1000 rnds of Thunderbolt and close to 500 of yellowjackets... I'm stumped, needs to go back to dealer and get store credit.
