I sold mine, but if I recall it actually slides on from the front all the way but not in the grooves and then slides forward from the rear. I could be wrong...but I think that is how it was.
Actually, the second picture has the takedown lever in the forward position with the hammer back. It is just really tricky to get the slide back on these things.
Tell him to try without the spring and guide just to see if it will go on. Also make sure the spring and flat part of the guide rod are seated in the hole in the silver metal block under the barrel.
