Hey guys im a newbie who just got his PAL and im looking at what to buy. I was thinking of going with the Sig mosquito as a starter handgun. Ive read some good reviews and some bad reviews so im hoping someone here can give me the final verdict.

Its A Sig :D a bit of moly on moving parts, maybe a light polish of the rough spots on the ramp, if any, and go shoot a million rounds, the extended lug model is sweet. these guns fit small hands well, but its fine for larger also.

Regarding your statement; is it necessary to use CCI mini mag for reliable funtion? Or will federal bulk packs work? I have read a lot of varying opinions on the web and it is hard to decide if it is a bad gun or stupid users... I am starting to think 50/50.

same thoughts here.
I want one, but am scared off by the atrocious reviews.
it cant be THAT bad...

Not a good gun at all. VERY picky on ammo. You have a lot of hit and miss when using bulk 22 ammo. For the same price, I would rather get a CZ 75b and Kadet kit, so you could shoot 22 and 9mm. Or if you just want a 22. Just get a Ruger or Buckmark. Btw, this is first hand experience.

Any gun in semi auto will mess up, thats why you get 2 springs, polish in the correct areas is the key, you do NOT want slop from your efforts, just polish tool marks, no need to take 'em out, etc
Any high velocity will cycle, for how long depends on the ammo, dirty, loaded incorrect amount of powder, bad primer , etc..if you can cycle std velocity from the light spring, your cooking..

I would recommend buying a quality .22 pistol instead. The Ruger Mk II/II and the Browning Buckmark both have a pretty good reputation.

The SIG Mosquito, like the Walther P99, is a pot metal POS. If you want a .22 that looks more like a centrefire pistol, better choices would be a CZ Kadet, Kimber 1911, or the .22 version of the P226.

I'll second that! Why on earth would anyone buy a brand new gun that they has to polish and fix right out of the box???

FWIW, I recently added a Browning Buck Mark to my rimfire stable and for the price it is a very good little gun.

I have both a Ruger III and Sig Mosquito
Both get what ever 22s I have on hand
The only ammo I've had trouble with is Winchester Wild Cat
But I had problems with this ammo in other guns as well

My sig is great. Mini-mag NEVER has had a hang-up and Federal bulk ammo works great for the first 200 rounds or so before it starts to gunk up the workings because it's so dirty. You'll get the odd stovepipe here and there afterwards until the gun is cleaned. Nothing else I've experimented with works that well (winchester super-x, other cci stuff). Don't buy a used one, buy a new one (some of the older serial number used ones were reported as having a lot more problems, which is why there are so many bad reviews on line).

That said, I can't argue with anyone who suggests you look into a CZ Kadet instead. :)

FWIW, I owned one and returned it after the first session. Failed to feed, failed to eject and the slide wouldn't lock after the last round. Tried CCI MiniMags, AE 36g, Dynapoints, CCI Standard Velocity and Federal Bulk packs. I couldn't shoot a complete magazine without a hiccup. Perhaps it needed to be broken in? I was going to do what LG suggested here but I have 3 other .22's that functioned perfectly (even when they were new out of the box) and decided to return it for a store credit rather than dicker with it. Others here on CGN have posted that they've had good luck with theirs. I can't recommend the Mosquito based on my experience. YMMV..........

I was faced with the same decision last year, I ended up going with the Ruger Mark 111 but I must have got a dud because it has issues with ejecting. Now I wish I would had got the Sig.

There is no pot metal in a P99, perhaps you meant the P22?

My Mosquito, was as dependable and accurate as most any other .22 semi pistol Ive owned or shot. Having said that if your new to shooting I would suggest the Ruger as well...there are lots of used ones around at reasonable prices, parts are available, and it will hold its resale value if you want somthing else in the future.

Great for plinking, feeds well with federal gold medal. The sig is my fun gun.
My ruger mark iii, is my target gun. If you put a reed dot on it can work pretty well for target.

Mine lasted ~6k rounds. The safety lever on the right side blew out, the slide has a 1.5" crack on the left rear rail extending past the safety lever. The breech block is bent near the chamber (managed to repair that). The takedown lever does not work very well, the barrel keeps loosening and the left grip panel is pulling away from the frame. The rear sight is broken as well and the front sight keeps sliding up and off the slide. The firing pin stop in the slide where the safeties are mounted is cracked and missing metal on the right side. The left side safety puked out its ball detent and spring when it fell off the gun (I found the lever and screw in the dirt). I have owned a great many guns in my day and this is the ####tiest one by far.
