I've noticed most of the Sigs I see are in .40S&W. Any reason people prefer this caliber over the 9mm? I was thinking of picking one up in 9mm just because ammo is a little cheaper and this is my first gun so I'll need to shoot lots. Any reason to get the .40S&W instead? There's one on the EE that's in my price range now :D

I really really like 9mm.

I haven't shot a p226 in .40, but a 2340... I prefer my 226 in 9mm.

If I remember correctly, a .40 can be re barreled easily to 9mm or .357 sig, but the 9mm can only be a 9mm.

9mm shouldn't be less common...maybe you see more .40's in the stores because 9's are sold out.

About conversions. .357 yes - just need a new barrel. But if you get a 9mm barrel it changes your POI a little.

The 226 was originally designed and perfected in 9 mm. IMO it is one of the best 9 mm pistols. I would like to have one if I had more safe space and money.

It was produced in 40 cal to satisfy a demand for sure. Many 226 shooters probably have both calibers. But I believe that the 9mm is more suited to the 226, specially if you want longer pistol life.

Actually the 40 cal was designed so that existing 9 mm pistol designs at the time could easily be chambered in 40. Notice that the head diameters are the same so that in theory, a simple barrel and mag change is all it takes to switch calibers. I also believe that with some pistols, 40 cal mags will accept 9mm cartridges and feed reliably as well.

But the 40 cal fires a bullet that is about 45% heavier than the 9mm at approximately the same velocity, although both are high pressure cartridges at about 32,000 cup/(psi?).

I don't know current rules, but if you intend to get into shooting sports where ammo power factor is an issue, then the 40 cal is easier to load to major. 9mm will probably limit you to minor.

The same pistol in the bigger caliber will definitely be more stressed.

If you intend to shoot a lot in practice, get the 9mm version.

get both......9mm first then would be my choice.

+1 on getting both.

9mm would likewise be my first choice. Have both the P226 and a SigPro 2022 .40 S&W. Love shooting both. Accuracy of Sigs will amaze you. Value and build quality are up there with the best. Trouble is, the thought that this will be your one and only pistol will fade away pretty fast once you shoot the first pistol in quantity. Like most of us "gun nutz", we just find a way to drum up more reasons to add firearms to the armory. Good luck shopping and post what you purchase with your range impressions. Happy shooting!!!!

Do they "beef up" the .40 in any way to accommodate it for the larger, more powerful round?
Is its service life decreased by a notable amount?
