I'm thinking about getting a Sig P226 for a range gun/ IDPA gun. I was wondering if anyone Knows if the P226 elite series guns (with a beavertail) fits into the IDPA gun box. I dont want to buy a gun and then not be able to use it for IDPA seeing my club is looking at getting into IDPA. Thanks in advance for all the help and suggestions.

Handgun with empty magazines inserted must fit wholly within a box with internal dimensions of 8 15/16” x 6” x 1 5/8” (tolerance +1/16”, -0”)

Its actually a box measuring 8 ¾” x 6” x 1 5/8” (222.3 mm x 152.4 mm x 41.3 mm), but I figured the OP would have looked that up. The only problem there might be with the Elite is width?

As I understand it:

Most versions of the P226 are SSP legal.

The exceptions are:

* P226 Elite Stainless (too heavy for SSP @ 43.0 oz - must shoot in ESP)

* P226 X5 Tactical (too long for the IDPA box by 0.05" but will fit with the beavertail trimmed a bit. SAO so it must shoot in ESP)

No this is not correct. In order for a gun with a steel dustcover or rail over 3.25" to shoot in IDPA it must meet all the requirements for SSP. Too, if it is to heavy for SSP it will be to heavy for ESP as the weight limits are the same. The weight limit is 43 oz (1219 grams) for all three pistol divisions.

To the OP it is best if you would review thr IDPA rule book pages 34 - 41. These pages outline the firearm requirements for all the handgun divisions of IDPA. If you intend to shoot 9MM then you will be interested in SSP and ESP Divisions. While models of the SIG 226 do meet the equipment requirements for SSP and by extensions ESP and we do see the guns at matches they are not as popular as other steel and polymer guns available to you.

This appears to be an excerpt from an IDPAforum post on February 24, 2012:

But in any case the comment is now outdated by new rules (circa March 2015), as outlined by Canuck44.

Thanks for that. As I said, it was as I understood it, but I'm glad to see I was wrong.

Yes, that's where I got it from when I created my own little "IDPA rules" for my reference in Word to keep on my computer. I will update it now.

Always refer to the RB and ignore 99% of what is written on the IDPA forum. The RB rules and read what the rule says not what you want it to say.

Thanks for the information Bob. I have read the IDPA rules in regards to guns in SSP and ESP Divisions. The reason I posted this thread was because I have heard that the dimensions on SIG's website for the P226 Scorpion are not accurate and people have had issues with the firearms not fitting into the IDPA gun box after purchasing it. As my local gun store only stocks the base model P226 I don't want to order the P226 Scorpion and then find out that it will not be usable to me in IDPA in the future. I have always liked SIG guns and have also wanted a DA/SA 9mm which is why I am looking at the P226. Just want a gun that i can use at the range and also for competition in the future.

Thanks again and any other information or resources that you can suggest for me to look at in terms of IDPA would be greatly appreciated.

Matt he RB is your answer and there is nothing magic about the Divisional rules. The key is reading the rules as they are written not how you would like them to read. If you have a specific gun you wish to discus and are not satisfied you are certain of it's status PM me or send me an email and I will be happy to walk you through the RB to get your answer or simply answer your question directly.

Well after looking around and trying a few different options I actually changed my mind on the P226. Went to the gun store on Thursday to pick up my Turkey Tag. Figured I should have a look at a few guns seeing I was there and ended up putting a CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow on hold. Long story short after looking up the CZ online a bit I went back on Friday after work and had to have it. I guess I now have my IDPA gun.
