The USP is not a 1911...it will feed just about anything, so I wouldn't worry about that. However, I do agree that for target shooting, JHP's are a waste.

Avsecb2, get some cheap Winchester white box or Remington UMC and go at it. Also, make sure you don't shoot lead reloads through the USP - that's a major no-no due to polygonal rifling.

The USP is a great pistol. You've made a good choice.

hey avesbc, if you want to try shooting a sig, I have two of them in 9. A stainless and a regular. Give me a shout.
 
He may have bought a sig, but he never put any rounds through it. Might as well put some rounds downrange before dismissing them entirely. ;)
 
Dang! Johan I forgot to PM you that I was going to POCO for the ISPC shoot, I wanted to see your Sig, will have to give you a shout next time I go up there.

It looks to me like you desperately want to get into pistol ownership, but have been beguiled by talk of SIG's and HK's, neither of which may be what you'll really be happy with. You've now got yourself a .45ACP which is not really a great cartridge to start off shooting a pistol with, regardless of the much-vaunted USP vehicle that's launching it.
Often, the last people to get advice from for a first pistol is the guy behind the counter at a gunshop. He's honour-bound to sell you what he has in-stock, in the gun display case.

Thanks for your comments. I am not really brand new, just new to semi auto's. I shot PPC revolver and some .357 mags for fun, and a bit of 9mmCZ. ISG actually took meprolight sights and a hogue grip that I bought somewhere else and traded me for the bullets. I thought that was very nice of them, but I don't think they know much about rounds. Whenever I ask about type of ammunition they just grab the only kind on the shelf. They seem not to be experts in ammo, at least not hangun ammo. I think I lied about the JHP if that's what I said, I meant FMJ. They don't bring in JHP, so I guess I will go to Kesselrings to buy them. John at Poco is going to trade me the 40's I bought for 45's. I imagine he knows about the lead thing you mentioned. I do have big hands and the USP45 probably fits my hand better than the Sig, which I think makes a huge difference, maybe the most difference in comfort and accuracy. Anyhow, I sure appreciate your valuable input. Sorry I mislead you in a couple of areas.
 
What the hell happened here? Your brand new SIG 226 is broken without ever firing it? Was it new? Thats brutal, I don't care how small or cheap the part is, nothing should break before you even shoot the gun. Where did you buy it? Do you still have the SIG? Or did you return it? Let us know the story.
 
avsecb2: I wouldn't bother too much with the JHP's...just shoot regular 230gr FJM's or even 230gr lead RN ammo until you get used to your USP. 200gr SWC's work great in a .45ACP pistol and are very accurate...I presume a USP will feed those as well. :rolleyes: BTW, not only is it illegal to purchase ammunition in the US without a hunting licence, you won't be able to bring JHP pistol ammo back into Canada anyway. They'll take it off you.
JOOC, are you still keeping the SIG? It was a P226R IIRC, right?
ISG still got the best end of the deal on that ammo, btw... ;)
John at PoCo will see you right for the ammo. Talk to him, he'll give you good advice....even about guns and ammo. :D

Hi SKYTRAIN, nice to hear from you again. The whole sad story is in this thread I think. Dry firing with snap caps broke it. The gun is gone back to Italian and I am getting a USP45 this week.

A hunting liscence for JHP huh, thanks again for the info. Guess I am a newbie. Haven't shot for a long while. How about powder, bullets, primers. Is there a hassle at the border over those?:confused:
 
You need a hunting license to legally purchase ANY ammo in the US, not just JHP's.
Components are also regulated and not worth the hassle anyway. Buy locally and save yourself the grief.

Really? I went to Double Action in Michigan to rent guns at least half a dozen times and no problem with purchasing ammo and they know I'm Canadian.
