Lately have been asking quite a few questions about the P226. It is a really nice gun but a bit pricey for my needs. I am only planning to use it for a few fun plinking days a year at the range as I am not into competitions. I am also planning to teach my 13 yrs old son to shoot handguns

While speaking to a friend of mine he told me to consider The P226 clone made by Norinco (Np22)

On the pictures it look realy nice but I cant convince myself to go for a chinese made gun.

On the other hand, If I go for a Norinco, This would leave me few extra $$ to get an other pistol (maybe a .22).

What you guys think of the norinco NP22 ? Is that a good buy for the price ?

The NP22 is fine for the money. I've found it depends on the gun you get. Both my son and I have one...his was great from the get go...mine, not so much. To bring it up to shooting standard (for me) I replaced a bunch of the parts, added the Sig SRT kit, Trijicon sights, etc. She shoots great now...but I've also got enough into it that I could have bought a Sig instead (which I did...but still have the NP22 also). If money is the issue...get the NP and then move up to the Sig when funds allow.

I saw one at the range a few days ago. Looked real good. The guy said it functioned flawlessly and shot good groups. Only drawback I can see is its Chinese made. If YOU can get past that then its a good bargain. Lots of guys on here seem to be happy with their Norinco 1911's so it stands to reason that Norinco would make a good copy of the P226. I'm wrestling with the same decison, for me I would rather pay the extra $$ and when someone asks if its a sig I won't have to say no, its a cheap Chinese knockoff.

One choice is to look at Questar, you can get the P226 in 22LR and a conversion kit for $1000.

But the norc's not a bad choice if on a tight budget and you can always upgrade later if you find yourself outpacing the norc.

Just like a 'Kit Car' you get the same performance right ??!!

+1 Get The SIG

If money is tight, look for an excellent used German P226 9mm, they shoot better than the recent models (for me) and cost several hundred dollars less on the EE or elsewhere. I have two I'm keeping, but there are LOTS out there.

The P226 .22, sorry, leaves me a bit cold. The cheap US model we get here doesn't lock open on empty.

I'm going to try to get some of the mags from the steel German SIG kits they sell in Europe, which do lock open. Don't bother with those pricey aftermarket mag followers that force alloy vs alloy to jam open your slide -- something will fail quite quickly there. I don't know why nobody brings in the steel version -- it would be about as pricey as the CZ Kadet, and about as good. I'd buy one.

Norinco's are hit and miss some are great some you shouldn't be shooting. I would either get a sig in 9mm or buy the GSG in 22 and shoot away.

The best choice would be a used SIG made prior to about 2006. New SIGs are not worth the high asking prices, given their lapse in quality control in recent years. The Norinco clone tuned up by Armco would be my second choice if you absolutely could not find a used P226.

I keep hearing that, but never actually saw one with issues.

All the SIG owners I know are extremely happy with them, and never had issues.

99% of gun owners don't shoot enough to know if their pistol is made of anything more durable than toothpaste. Most people are happy with anything they buy that's shiny or "badass" in some imperceptible way.

As far as Nork/SIG goes, I wrote this in another thread but thought it might interest you.

But a used and rebuilt German Sig is a much nicer gun than a Norinco copy...and the mags are actual Sig mags, not the garbage Chinese mags. This isn't a big deal with 1911s where mags are relatively cheap and easy to come by but with $50-60 Sig mags it really matters.

I bought a German sig recently with minimal holster wear and that's it...internals are mint (not surprising on the CPO guns) with 4 Mec-Gar mags for under $600.

Figure that buying a Nork + 4 quality mags would cost you $550+tax, assuming the mags were $50 each and shipped for free...often the mags are closer to $60 and may not ship from the same supplier as the pistol so could word out to more like $75 once you figure in taxes and shipping...so $300 in mags and $400+ for the Nork after taxes and shipping.

So if you actually intend to run your gun, and therefore need quality mags, the cost difference between a Norinco Sig knockoff and an actual West German Sig - incidentally most serious Sig guys believe these to be the best of the Sigs - is negligible, or possibly in favour of the actual Sig. For this reason I think buying the Norinco version is frankly nuts.
