The 229 was an evolution of the 228 - the 228 is without question the best "feeling" Sig, if the 226 feels a bit big for you, the 229 should feel better. I know it doesn't measure that much differently but for folks with grip problems on the 226, the 229 is probably a better choice. (Besides it's much "Tacticooler")

Well... on this topic... what I can tell you is this: I shoot a lot, I try and make a point of trying everything I can, and I have yet to find a better 9mm pistol than my SIG 229R. It is just an absolutely superb pistol in every way: look, feel, accuracy, reliablity. It's a true champion. 226 is good too. Every shooter is a little different, but I have personally not had the slightest interest in 226s since the 229s came to Canada. Since I bought my 229, people at my range.. including at least two of the ROs have commented that I am a "good shot". Nobody ever said that to me in the years I was shooting GLOCK, Steyr M9A1, Walther P99, etc. I credit the 229 with at least some of improvement. If I were only going to buy/own one firearm, it would be a 229R in 9mm, and that is the advice I would give to anyone else as well.
On the look/barrel issue... fuggedaboutit... the 229 looks awesome in person. The only people that are concerned about the barrel issue are... umm... people who spend too much time looking at pictures of guns on the internet. Here is mine:
This (below) is one of the first groups I ever shot with the P229 on the first day I took it out in August 2007. I couldn't believe how much "better" I got since I started using this gun! I shoot 5 and 10 shot ragged holes at 10 and 15 yards regularly now. I rarely save targets anymore. I can put up the same results over and over again with this gun. With most other guns I struggle to keep every shot on an 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper at 25 yards. I shoot groupings on multiple points of aim on that same piece of paper at 25 yards with the SIG. It's a great gun. Not a word of a lie. Superb. Superb. Superb.
