SIG P226 question

So I was out at the range the other day and had a friend shooting my SIG, and he kept complaining that the casings were being ejected at him, a few hitting him in the face. I thought they were just coming off the wall and hitting him because of how he was standing but then I started shooting it and I noticed the same thing, every few rounds some would come back at me, and they were not hitting the wall at all. I have looked at the gun but can't figure it out, any ideas?

This gun does have a couple thousand rounds through it.
Also the same day I noticed that the slide was not locking back when the mag was empty all the time, it only happened to me one time, but my friend about 5 times. I am using a new brand of ammo, but it’s still factory.

Oh ya, it’s in 9mm
 
It would help if you had a more accurate round count and better described what ammo you were using. Also do you have a folded steel slide or a stainless slide?
My first thought though would be a weak recoil spring. Sig currently recomends changing the recoil spring at 5000 rounds but some people swear that you shoud replace it at 3000.

its the folded steel slide, and at about 2500-3000 rounds, I just replaced the recoil spring about 500 rounds ago (I had to replace a pin, and bought a spring kit at the same time)

I'll take it out again and check to see if its limp wresting, did not think it was because it happened to me, I have put at least 1500 rounds through this gun without a problem. but I did change the grips just before I went out so it’s a possibility.
 
see if the mag catch isn't catching the mag properly? bent mag lip?
also, clean and lube the gun up. If anything, disassemble, and reassemble, clean off the carbon and light lube. try again.

If you are using a diferenty type of factory ammo than what you would normally use, I wonder if the OAL is either too long or too short...

Were you using Winchester 115 gr ammo?
 
Check to see that the new grips are not interfering with the slide catch. I put new hogue wraparounds on mine(older style) a while back and it started to have reliability issues. it turns out that the grips were exerting a bit of pressure on the slide catch lever. you may need to hollow out the area underneath the slide catch lever. The hogue instructions actually mentioned it may need slight mods. I hope that this may help.

Just the opposite actually, i was using Hogue's for the past 2 years and decided to switch back to the stock Sig grips. but i did notice with my Hogues were putting extra pressure on the decoking lever because they were a bit thicker, but it still functioned properly.
 
Went out to the range today and put about 200 rounds through it using all of my mags and did not have the problem with the slide not catching, could have been just my friend limp wristing. I still however do have the problem of casing coming straight back at me. How do I 'tune the extractor'?
 
I had a problem with an older Sig's frame cracking. All sorts of weird stuff started happening before it finally failed. Maybe check the slide for any cracks, although this is only a problem with older Sigs.
