Does anyone have the Sig P226R classic .22? If so how does it compare to the mosquito in terms of reliability/feeding/etc?

I know the slide does not lock back but it's something I could overlook I think ... was also considering the .22 conversion kit for my 9mm version but not sure yet.

TIA

I have both and have found that the P226 conversion is better. Feeds any ammo and the mosquito is fussy as to ammo. Prefer the feel of the full size pistol and I can change slide and shoot center fire ammo.

Does it feed reliably with bulk stuff like federal 525, winchester 333/555, etc?

Is your conversion accurate out to 15-25 feet?
Have any pics of some groups/etc?

I really want something that will last and I can practice with for a lot longer at the range - can't afford to shoot centerfire as much as I want to. also I already have a holster for my p226 so it would be useable as well

Main problem for me with the Sig P226 Classic 22 is that the slide doesn't lock open after the last shot. There are some mag followers that jam the slide open, but I like these even less than dry firing. I guess I could learn to count to 10.

226 in .22 can have a 9mm top end installed for way less (something like $300 less) than if you bought a 226 9mm and installed a .22 conversion kit. I'd love to hear someone explain that one!

The P226, and I have two with the conversions on them, feed every different type of .22 I have thrown at them. Cheapest bulk ammo all the way to CCI.
Normally we are shooting at 25 feet and the results are very good. No pictures as my 10 year old grandson and 15 year old granddaughter get to do mosty of the blasting. Every range trip results in about 1000 rounds going down range. We have put about 4000 rounds through each of them this summer and the only FTF is when they get really dirty. If I clean after each trip, no problems.

I own a 22lr classic and used to have a mosquito.

The only advantage of the mosquito, imo, is that it locks back on the last round. Mine was reliable, but it's so small compared to a real 226 and it generally felt like junk. Plastic frame (not glock plastic, cheapo plastic; very fragile) and the trigger was heavy and gritty. It wasnt easy to clean with the fixed barrel, but probably easier than most Ruger or Buckmark.

P226 classic 22lr all the way; you got a real 226 with the same trigger you're used to. It sucks that it doesnt lock back though. I got some special follower to lock the slide, but it still doesn't engage on the slide lock; it locks the slide on the follower. Partial solution, but it works.

Edit: I forgot... I shoot mainly 525 bulk Federal champion 36gr from SFRC ~25$ a box with no issues. It can shoot anything, but I prefer "copper washed" to lead; less scrubbing needed :)

Thanks everyone - any of yous guys East of the GTA where I could test fire one at the range? I would not buy a mosquito but I am considering the conversion kit or the entire gun. I would also get the follower plug so that it locks back on the follower for kicks, could get my BIL to make me some even.

I have read a lot of shady things with sigs 22 kits so that is why I created this thread. Youtube shows a lot of guns where the slide does not rack smoothly and then it FTFs all the time - glad to hear yours are good

Anyone try one of these conversion kits on a Norinco Sig copy?

and

Can someone please tell me where I could buy the mag follower plug and who sells the cheapest conversion kit?

Thanks :)

Try sigpowerdotcom, Believe they have the follower.
If you do order one post the results, I've got a 226 22 + 9mm slide coming next week, and was looking at maybe getting the follower as well.

Not sure specifically for the 22 slide, but when I was comparing costs of the 22 + 9 slide, quester and wolverine generally had the best prices

I would also be interested to know if anyone has tried the .22 conversion kit on a Norinco NP-22 :)

I have been pretty satisfied with my .22 conversion kit for my P226 9mm. It is certainly as accurate as I am, and I like shooting cheap .22's out of the same platform I use for 9mm. I've only shot Remington Golden Bullet .22's, so I can't comment on ammo flexibility.

However, I initially had a few mechanical issues:
1. First, the .22 conversion slide rides (rode?) a bit rough. Especially in the beginning, I had lots of issues with it not getting back into battery after cycling. the slide would come forward but stop about 2mm short. I worked around it in the beginning by doubling the amount of oil I would normally use on the slide rails. After 3000 rounds through the kit, though, things seem to have worked in nicely.
2. I have had some issues with the .22 upper balking at going back on the pistol. It seems to require very precise alignment of the take-down lever. I've never had an issue EVER with the 9mm slide, but the .22 fights me sometimes. Also, every time you put it on, you have to manually push the .22 barrel back with your finger before you can rotate the take-down lever back to locked. It seems this is standard behaviour for this kit.
3. The spring guide rod in the .22 kit was badly chewed up after only 1000 rounds or so. I have a stainless rod on order from sigpower. (I also have a mag follower on order. I can let you know how that goes when it arrives.)

None of these issues would stop be from buying the kit again, but I thought you should go in with your eyes open.

I started with the 226 classic 22 then bought the 9mm conversion...the .22 handles any high velocity 22..I've used it with CCI bulk, Federal, Win x pert and Rem Thunderbolt..the latter ftf about 1 in 10 but that is the ammo.
Whether the .22 kit is for you depends on what you want...if it is practice then it is great..feels like the centrefire ..very well made ..but you'll need to train yourself to count....it is not very competitive in ISSF std pistol

The sights are "Ok". The middle is a bit higher so the "Alignement" feels a bit different as the notch is higher vs SIGLite night sights. Here are some pictures of the sights beside my 9mm and a family picture. Adjustable sights are good with a 22lr pistol since different brands of amunition seems to have different POA. I don't think you can change them anyway as the sight insert has nothing to do with the one on my 9mm. to It pretty much look like your "run of the mill" p226. I can post some more pictures if you want to see something else.

The barrel is different, I have no clue what's the use for the hook on it; it doesn't attach to anything.. it's just there. I also included a picture where it's totally detailed strip. The internals are identical to a normal P226, beside the slide assembly.

I upgraded mine with parts from Sigpower; I got some special follower and a SS guide rod. If it would lock back on the last round like a normal P226, that gun would be perfect!

nice pics - how is it with the slide locking back on the mag follower? I know you have to rack the slide to drop the mag that way but do you prefer it to dry firing once and then dropped the ag?

I'll try to remember to post some picture with the slide locked back on the follower tonight when I get home. I also have a spare follower; I'll post some pic of it too vs normal follower.

It's a bit dirty; just got back from the range :)

I'm no alloy specialist, but I think the follower is made of alumnium. It doesn't damage the slide at all, but it does seem to be "smooth" metal. It'll last for a while imo.
