SIG P228R - pictures

Got my new SIG P228R. I'll do a review when I get a chance to shoot it. For now, here are some pics. The fit and finish on this thing looks great. It looks like (or, at least I am hoping!) it is going to be a real gamer at the range.

I'll post comparison pics with the 229, 239, etc. Those of you that know me, know that is all coming soon.

One of the really cool things about this new SIG, it comes with two of the 13 round 9mm mags, pinned to 10-rounds. The 13 round bodies are pretty cool though. Very slick. Seen here with a 10-round body mag (with plastic base) for comparison:

Thanks to Mark and Questar for bringing some of these 228's in. Yah, they are not cheap, but it looks to be an excellent firearm - and not one you are going to see a lot of. I think Questar got 5. I bought one of those. I'll surprised if there are many more than that.

I do like those mags. The 10 rounders with the plastic on bottom feel so cheap for some reason. I certainly wouldn't want to drop them more then a few times.

What's with the grip screws? They almost look green.

I can't believe that there are railed P228s.

Are they the slim version of the P229?

229 slide is a bit wider than a 228 slide. 228 slide is "straight walled". 229 slide flares out toward the bottom. 228 and 229 frame are the same width. This photo is P229 on left. NP-34 (228-type) on right:

239 is (in some ways) a slim, single-stack, 229. The 229 and 239 slide are built the same way and are very, very similar. 239 is just shorter and slimer.

What's with the grip screws? They almost look green.

Yah, I noticed this with Questar Mark's pics as well. They look normal when just looking at the gun, but the camera flash produced that effect somehow. Maybe some kind of treatment on the screw that shows up under bright light?

Not cheap is a bit of an understatement. Top Gear Supply sells them for $829.00 USD and some other internet dealers in the U.S. have them on cheaper than that. Yes it is unique but it's just a stamped slide on a normal 229 frame for that kind of money there are lots more interesting Sig's availiable.

ghostie, you're doing a great job with your gun reviews. I was in the market for a .22 and decided to get the SIG 229 Classic .22 after reading your thread on your 229s. I just got my gun today and love it.

Questar should be paying you commission.

I have owned a bunch of Sigs and my P228 is the only one I am attached to. I shoot all Sigs well but the P228 feels best in my large mitts. In the end, I hope you enjoy your new toy. Regards, Richard

Honest, the grip screws look pretty much normal to the eye. If they are any different, I could change them out if I wanted. I have a bunch of stock and aftermarket SIG grip screws around.

The mags are pinned in a very classy ``Questar way`` (I have some other mags from them that are done this way). I`ll have to post a pic, but it basically looks like some kind pin or rivet on the back - underneath the follower - and then smoothed off or polished somehow.

i did some checking, i believe the sig grip screws have a phosphated coating, which gives that green tint to it,, ( they will never rust)
so thats kind of cool feature.


please post some pics of the pinned mags, very curious.

That's a very nice piece you got there. I dealt with Mark from questar a few weeks ago for some infos about a product: very polite and professional, he gave me very detailed informations about the product. Once I get my rPal (Soooo lonnnggg), I'll sure deal with questar with confidence.

BTW what are the sights on the 228? Siglites?

I shot my SIG 229 .22 for the first time today and all I can say is that the jury is still out on this one.

I'm not a handgun expert, having only recently taken up this activity so don't take my word for it. I went to the range today and shot my three pistols: Colt 1911, Glock 17 and the SIG. The Colt and Glock shot accurately and flawlessly but the SIG was very buggy.

I was firing Remington .22 Target, 40 grain that I picked up from Le Barons. Here are the downsides I found:

1) The rounds did not cycle the action properly and several times a round got stuck.

2) Accuracy was bad. While the Colt and Glock were hitting the 25yd target the SIG wasn't even hitting the paper. It obviously needs to be sighted properly.

3) After the last round the slide doesn't stay open do you have to do that manually.

The good points are that the gun is flawlessly built and gives the option of upgrading to other calibers later.

So, I really like the look and feel of the gun but I need to do some work to it to get it to fire accurately without sticking.

K2 , all i can say , your not the only one i have heard that from about the 22 uppers for sigs, my only advice is go get a real centerfire upper (ie 9mm,40 or 357sig) they are very buggy, and imho not worth the giant price tag, the only one i hear good things about is the glock one , (cant remember the name of it, but its not made by glock)

Took some more 228 pics for anyone who is interested:

Comparison with 229 (top) and 228 (bottom). Some differences: 229 has milled stainless steel slide; 228 has stamped carbon steel slide; 229 slide is wider at the bottom than the top, and the cocking serations are "half"; 229 has external extractor; 228 extractor is internal; 228 slide has a firing pin insert that can be removed, by taking out those two opposed roll pins in the slide; on the 229, if you knock out the "firing pin positioning pin" it is just the firing pin and its spring, and the safety lock and its spring, that come out, the rest of the slide is one solid piece of steel. The frames are the same, except that the 229 has an "AM" serial number. 228 has a "B" serial number. The barrels are the same.

239, 229, 228. Note the rounded tops of the 239 and 229. The 228 has a flat-cut top - which has its own charm, but the 239 and 229 really do look nicer. The 228 thing is sort of the manufacturing techniques of a bygone era in some ways.
