Who here owns a Sig P228R? I did a search and found some posts, most are old though.

That gun is more appealing to me every day, but the problem is that I haven't seen one in person yet. Is it the same overall size as the 229? I noticed the slides are different but that's about it.

There is a lot of love for the 228 and I want to figure out why

I have a P228 and P229R and prefer the 228. It seems to be slightly better balanced in my hand. Not that the 229 is a bad pistol, its just that the 228 feels better and looks better. In my opinion, of course.

Too bad you don't live in my area, that's a nice Sig collection!!

I agree that the p228 is a beauty, much better than the turtle shell slide of the p229 (although the p229e2 has a p226-like slide now)

Do you have the railed version of the 228? It has a stamped slide right?

Older version of the P228, no rail. That was the way I wanted it. Took quite a while to find one that was restricted, as the 228 is a prohibited pistol until the barrel is changed to the longer one. I'm not sure about the slide. Questar had a P228R for sale a while ago.

I have an older West German P-228 and the P-228R (but no P-229R to compare it to).

For me the old P-228 just fits perfectly in my hand. It's very accurate (rivals my full size P-226R). It is just a plain comfortable gun. They are tough to find in the restricted category, and that's why mine is a "never sell". (I tried to buy another one a while back, but the seller wanted it to say prohibited and wasn't interested in any offer to supply a new restricted barrel)

The 228R I bought earlier this year on a lark. I still haven't fired it. I was a little disappointed with the finish. It seems spotty in places, and there is a section on the inside of the slide that Sig Sauer is no longer finishing, so the bare steel is below.

Frankly, I expected more as it was advertised as one of their German guns. While the frame and slide are marked "Made in Germany", I can't find an import mark on it so I assume it's assembled or finished in the US.

To the OP, do a search for postings by member "ghostie" he's done a few comparisons of different Sigs.

edit: found it

And I think trying to find a 228R is going to be pretty tough. I only saw them sold by Questar, and they didn't seem to have many. I'd be curious to know how many of them are in Canada.

Q has a P228R right now in stock, but it's $1599 ... seems excessive? what's the chance that I will see one for sale in the next 3-4 months? is it a super limited count in Canada?

Questar brought in 5 of the 228Rs in the Spring of 2009. I bought one (at the full price) and four of them sat there for months. Then some other guy bought one. Later, they dropped the price down by about $300 and cleared out the remaining three within a few days of dropping the price.

I've been shooting my 228 for about a year, and it is a fantastic gun. I can't say that the performance is really any different than a 229 - as the 229 is also a fantastic gun - but the feel is a bit different.

The frames, barrels, guide rod and spring, and magazines are interchangable between all 228s and 9mm 229s. The difference is that the 228s use the old-style stamped carbon steel slide, and the 229s use the newer-style milled stainless steel slide. The slide of the 228 seems lighter to me, which seems to effect (positively, just ever so slightly) the feel of the gun.

The one I bought also came with two of the cool shiney black full size mags, not the hollow plastic mags that other 9mm SIGs come with in Canada.

I really like mine. It is not value for money to buy it at full price, but neither is it something that you are going to see in a gun store anywhere in Canada. I would be shocked if anyone other than Questar has imported any. There are likely only 7-10 of them in Canada.

I picked up one of the ones Questar had on "sale". It was still way to much to pay compared to the US prices but as no one else had them and they are rare here I decided to go for it.
It is just, a 228 slide on a current US assembled frame so I didn't feel too bad about installing the DAK trigger system on it. It's a very nice pistol to shoot and the balance is a little different but I shoot my other 229's just as well. I think to truly compare the two you would need an original all German 228. There seems to be lots of originals for sale in the US but because of the barell length they are not availiable here.

any pics?

The sale price was $1299?

I think that is what I paid for mine. Whatever you do don't check the Top Gun Supply web site in the US. The prices they charge will make you cry. They also have CPO 228's for just over $500.00 USD.
Sorry I don't have a pick since I did the DAK conversion. I was going to keep it in the DA/SA configuration but I really like the DAK trigger much better and as it wasn't an all German pistol I didn't feel too bad about it.

 i just looked, damnit!

Sorry but I did try to warn you about that. Top Gun is great to deal with and their quick shipping is legendary. Unfortunately they don't ship to Canada but a US PO box works great for parts orders.

I red the post out of interest and seen all those Sig's, nice collection. And I'll throw my 2 cents in for what it is worth. The P228 has the longer slide serrations and the P229 although very nice too, has the shorter serrations in the slide, and hence why I prefer the P228, more to grab onto for racking the slide (And I like the pistol without the rail, but that's a personal preference) Anyway, your choice, shoot both if you can, and go from there, it's your choice. And Again to the Guy that posted the Sig layout, Nice Sig Collection!

Here are some pics of my 228R. I think these have all gone up before. I can try and get some new ones up ones of these days, if anybody wants them. I also have some videos of it as well on my Youtube channel:
P.S. - the grip screws look gray to the naked eye. There is something weird about the flash that makes them look green in the photos.

Nice gun ghostie - I really dig it! wish I could own a prohib so the barrel doesn't stick out of the end!

I'm going to wait and see if one ever goes up for sale on the EE

Very nice P228 and thanks for the pictures, nice pics too (good to see a good camera). I love the P228, I just wish they weren't so expensive up here. Does anyone else bring them in (and if so, will you die waiting?)?
