Hi,

Will be going through my restricted course in a couple of weeks, followed by the long wait for the licence.

Wanted to put the Sig on hold or pre-order it. So far all I could come up with is 6 to 8 month wait times for the aforementioned gun, was hoping to get it quicker than that. I can't even get the shops to verify that their suppliers even have that specific model on order, it's just estimated wait times.

Anyone ever import from the U.S.? What's involved? I'll probably have better luck finding it there eventually than I will in Canada. I can drive to Buffalo in an hour and a half or do the mail order thing if that's possible.

To complicate matters even further the P229 would have to have the longer Canadian barrel.

Any idea's?

Thanks in advance

Not sure if many dealers would be willing to order in anything for a person who doesnt have their restricted license yet but I wouldnt know. Importing from the US as your first purcahse would be a huge headache for a few reasons, the big one being that youd have to find someone willing to put in the longer barrel, pay extra for the barrel, then register it as such. The chances of you tracking that particular model down in stock are pretty slim, especially in .40. My only advice would be to hold and shoot a regular 229 in .40 first if you can, its not for everyone, especially the beavertail model, it doesnt fit everyone. If after trying it your still sold on it then order it and wait, its going to be your best route as far as getting one.

Hi there,

Like SlimTim said, its a really headache to buy a gun from the USA. Having to cross the boarder and since its a prohibited gun without the slightly larger barrel would even be more of a pain. IMO, I would steer clear of the states and try to find something you like here.

Now, onto the 229. I do have a P229 in 9mm. And let me tell you its a dream to shoot! By far my favorite handgun. It handels any caliber well as it has both a metal frame and slide, so recoil should not be an issue. I presume you are in the GTA area or somewhere of that nature since you are close to Buffalo. Its not to hard to find these around. There is a couple places that have some such as this online store called Questar which is fantastic! As well, there are places like Elwood Epps (Orillia, ON) and Williams Arms (Port Perry, ON) that could ship to you and give you a better deal than places in the city! Actually, if you go onto Williams Arms site under the used section, there is a P229 in 40 thats in excellent condition up for grabs. Too bad you don't have your RPAL... And unfortunately, its going to take a while to get it. The only thing I can think of is if you have a friend with his/her RPAL, ask them to buy it and keep it for you until you get your license and then do a swap. Right now, I would just stick on getting your course under your belt and then when you get your license, see what people have in stock. Anyway, I have included the website to Williams Arms to show you the used P229 in 40. http://www.williamsarms.net/usedfirearms.html (Its in the middle of the page under Sig)
Also, here is Questar's website for you to take a look around on. https://shopquestar.com/shopping65/default.asp

Good luck with getting your RPAL and be safe. If you have any questions let me know or anyone else on here! :) :)

Hi all,

Many thanks for the advice. Shot Questar an email(no pun intended), about a week ago, came back with "Unfortunately we cannot provide any delivery estimate for any SIG product. SIG like nearly every other US manufacturer stopped quoting deliveries late
last year. "

Held a 229 stainless in 9mm at Al Simmons in Hamilton, felt great in hand, beaver tail and all. I've got somewhat large hands, fit me perfect(as far as I could tell, never fired a hand gun mind you). It weighed in like a brick, albeit a beautiful stainless steel brick with rosewood grips. Would of payed full pop right there and then to have it put on hold for me, but, unfortunately in 9mm.

Kinda thought the us import was goin to be a pita with companies like Questar charging a 500 dollar import fee. Although I could probably order a Canadian version from a buffalo gunshop(not sure), faster than I could get one here(not sure again) .

It leaves me thinking how these shops are coming up with 6 to 8 month wait times when Sig's not taking their distributor's order for a period of up to a year. That would have to mean the exact gun is previously ordered, which they can't confirm.

Sincerely,

RM

Since you have never had a handgun before, I would just go with the 9mm to start off. Its a great caliber and is also more cost effective when you want to shoot through as many mags as you can! Its not a .22 so don't be worried about not having enough power. 9mm is plenty powerful and 40 is just a snappier, more expensive caliber. As well, especially if you want to start getting into competitions, 9mm is just right!

However, there are definitely places with the P229 in 40. Its not a hard nor rare item to acquire. Once you get your RPAL and visit some shops, I'm a 100% you will find one in CANADA. As I did mention, it would really be tricky to get a gun from the USA when they do have them here regularly. IMHO, definitely not worth the wait, hassles and fees for importing from the USA. Just keep your eyes peeled and worry about passing the course first. Be safe out there and for your sake, always remember ACTS AND PROVE!!!

And given the current state of affairs as far as getting guns period if someone has a 9mm in stock in the flesh right now your best play would probably be to buy the 9mm. The .40 serves you no benefit, especially as your first handgun.

I second on that Tim! If I did it again, I would stick to just 9mm and .45 (once I gain more experience with the 9mm of course!) :)

I have nothing against .40, I have one in my collection (Gen4 Glock 35) and I enjoy shooting it, but its not what I log the most time on by any means. Unless your shooting IPSC and trying to make major power factor, where .40 makes all the sense in the world, there really isnt any reason to choose .40 over 9 other than just because, or for something different. As a beginner its arguably going to be harder to learn on as well, any gun in .40 vs 9 is going to be a lot less forgiving of improper or inconsistent form, grip etc. The 'snap' of the .40 recoil some dont enjoy either.

Thanks again for the advice,

Wanted the 40 over the 9 for the increased velocity/energy it provides. Was hoping the stainless sig 229's weight would tame some of the increased recoil issues. Like some of you said it won't make a difference to paper.

Realize that it's a lot of gun for a newbie. Maybe I'll get a 9 or 22 later on, but for now it's definitely my first choice.

I've looked long and hard and made quite a few calls but if anyone comes across one please let me know. Again it's a Sig P229 Elite stainless in 40 cal with Canadian barrel. Not interested at all in used.
