Sig P229R failure

Took my new Sig P229R .40 S&W out yesterday out for the first time. I managed to put approx. 150 rounds before it before a massive failure. The trigger and hammer and both jammed.

Not sure what the problem is. Neither will budge. I had multiple RSO's at Silverdale look at it too, and they were all unsure. I took the grips off when I got home, but not being familiar with the inner workings, I'm not sure if anything looks off.

I'll be testing the Sig warranty shortly. I'm tempted to try and fix myself, but I don't want to invalidate any warranty - esp. for a gun 30 days old. I'll be taking it back to Al Flaherty's once I get the temporary ATT.

And that wasn't my only problem. The sights are set low - and I mean really low. 4 or 5 inches at least at 25 yards. I'm hardly a great shot, but I can normally put rounds on paper. With the sights aligned and resting on the bench, rounds were hitting the ground before even making it to the target. I had to aim significantly higher just to hit paper - to the point that the target was fully obstructed by the slide just to hit the paper. Not impressed.

I investigated a bit, and noticed other people having similar problems with 229R's manufactured around the same date as my model. Seems like Sig was swapping out front sights for people who had problems, so hopefully this is an easy fix.

Regardless, not impressed with my first expericies with this pricey weapon. Hopefully Sig lives up to their end of the bargain and makes things right. If I wanted cheap, I could've bought a Norinco clone.

There's definitely something wrong with your trigger bar spring. It's really hard to tell from just the pic's if it's installed correctly; in some it seems right but not in others. The end of the spring which attaches to the trigger bar must be in the little V notch that is on the lower arm of the trigger bar. If you want, remove the spring and manipulate the trigger bar into the correct position with it camming off the large silver pin that protrudes through the frame. (Hammer pivot pin) With the trigger bar back in position reinstall the spring with the hook on the spring fitting into the aforementioned V. This should put tension back on the trigger bar and you should be able to pull the trigger and release the hammer. Put the slide back on or control the hammer as it moves forward as you can damage the sear by letting the hammer fall without the slide attached to stop it going too far forward.
Was the trigger spring in the position that it is in for the pic's when you removed the grips? The trigger bar spring provides the tension to keep the trigger bar in contact with the hammer and the firing pin safety and the lower part of the trigger bar actuates the hammer. Without proper tension the pistol will not fire. I have never seen the trigger bar move down into the position that it is in now with the spring attached.
One other question, you said that the "hammer jammed" were you able to use the decocker to drop the hammer? The decocker should work even without the trigger bar attached.

Thanks for this. No, the decocking lever won't release the hammer. It currently does nothing.

Perhaps I'll try fiddling with the spring. Really regretting not taking the grips off when it was functional so I'd know what it is supposed to look like.

Sorry, I forgot about your sight question. From the pic's your rear sight is not installed correctly. It should be even in the dovetail and no metal showing on the bottom as in your pic's. Is that the way they were or did someone try to drift them? Sig uses a "combat" sight picture so if you are used to a six o'clock hold you will be shooting low. Basically the dot on the front sight is your point of impact so the front blade will be covering your target. There should be small numbers on the sights themselves and the numbers for a .40 should be 8 rear and 6 front.

"No, the decocking lever won't release the hammer." Ok that's not good, there is definitely something else going on here. It's really hard to try to diagnose the problem from the pic's though. I'm afraid your best move is to send it back to Sig. In the meantime try posting your pic's and description on Sigforum and see if anyone there can offer an explanation.

I have had 2 recent SIG (centerfire) lemons myself. I am really disappointed with their recent QC. Dealer made right though.
Hope A.F. stands behind what they sell and you dont get an "ellwood" expirence.

That's the way the sights came. I didn't adjust them. Combat sight picture would be fine, but it was shooting FAR lower than that. I'll have the shop check them out too. Seems that Sig installed wrong sights on some models from that time. Tx for your helpful responses.

No problem. Let us know how things work out. I'm sorry that your Sig experience has been so bad so far but rest assured that your problems are far from normal. I own quite a few Sig's and I have never had a problem but I guess anything can happen. If you are not a member I encourage you to join Sigforum or just browse, as there are lots of good people and knowledge about Sig's to be had there.

Going by your pics only, it looks like you trigger bar spring is in the right spot. But, looking at the pic, it appears as though your trigger bar may be lodged under the the frame of your gun. Appears to be stuck between the frame and hammer/hammer strut area. I'm going on memory here, but the top of your trigger bar should be sitting just below the hammer pivot pin.....
