Hey CGN

I'm kinda on the fence here about my next pistol and would like to hear your thoughts. I'd primarily be using the pistol for punching paper and maybe one day try some competition shooting. Ive got my sights set on either the new SIG P320 or the tried and tested SIG P226

SIG P320
Pros
-Modular
-~$750
-Holster Incl.

Cons
-Unknown Longevity
-Aftermarket Availability

SIG P226
Pros
-Proven
-All metal frame
-Plentiful Aftermarket

Cons
-~$1000+

What do you guys think?

P.S. The action really doesnt matter much to me I dont mind the DA/SA or DAO

Check that barrel on the P-226. They have always been 4.4 inches in the standard models and 5 inches only with the X-5's. Why is a 4.7 inch barrel a con? You didn't mention caliber or the type of competition that may interest you. Both these guns will put you in IPSC Production where a 9mm makes sense for several reasons particularly if you are a new shooter.

Yup you are correct, don't know where I got 5 from thanks. Post corrected. And yeah i'm not to sure which competition I would try to participate in but it would be in 9mm

Pro: P226 stainless, back on target straight away in 9. Con: expensive, but you won't regret it.

Here's mine, careful, ruin you for all other pistols.

The high axis , heavy slide of the 226 is a disadvantage.
As is a DA then SA trigger .

Both are excellent range guns.

But if you engaged in shooting sports. The advantage would likely be the p320.

If you look up the standings for ipsc and note the firearms used. Almost no one uses a 226 "for the win". You'll see glocks, CZECH , tangos, custom jobs .

Maybe it has been done .
But not often.

Totally disagree. The 320 is a new design, parts & magazines will be harder to find and who knows how it would stand up to high round counts. For me the only pro to the 320 is the price point but you can sometimes find pre-owned 226's for about the same amount. Regarding shooting sports, it's practice time that makes a winner. If you have the skill to win with a Glock you can win with a Sig.

Yes it has been done.
I won one level 2 with mine last winter. Can it be done without a SRT? I don't think I am that good of a shot to do it...

The high axis , heavy slide of the 226 is a disadvantage.

My first gun was a SIG X-Five Allround in .40 which after Bruce Gray's work was a fine pistol to say the least. I've just recently bought two Tanfoglios that are close to the same weight as the X-Five. However based on memory, the Tanfos shoot better at speed for me. The high grip, high bore axis really does the trick. My SIG P-210 has similar geometry and is the nicest gun to shoot that I've ever experienced.

There are better strikers available than the 320

Sig 226, outdated, but capable pistol.

The SIG 226 is outdated?? You Glock guys gotta learn to relax. How is a 226 outdated? I'm not crazy about DA/SA pistols, that's why I prefer the 1911, but to say that the design is outdated is a bit of a stretch. The 226 does have a couple of disadvantages, compared to other pistols; the center of the bore sits a bit high above the hand which induces greater muzzle flip, and its a bit large for the cartridge it fires, but they are reliable, they're much more accurate than a fighting gun needs to be, and they're much easier to shoot well than some of their competitors.

Get Both! :dancingbanana:

I bought the 226 a couple of years ago and it rocks. Lots and lots of holsters, accessories, magazines, and conversion kits! :D

When the P320 Came out, I had to have it and I'm liking the trigger a bit better than my Grock 17 with a 3.5 lb disconnector. Now if they can make more magazines and holsters for the 320, that would be just great.

Since I ain't getting any boomsticks issued to me anymore, I can buy what I want and I'm hoping all of you do the same:

Buy for your game, ego, personality, holsters, caliber, budget, cool factor! Buy for what works for YOU and nobody else.

Most of all, buy it so yer #### won't fall off ! ha ha ha You knew I could not resist that.

In the meantime I'm in contact with Safariland and HolsterOps dot com to source some 6378 paddle carry holsters in FDE to augment my business! :D

Keep helping dem nooobs out there!

Cheers all!

Like. Great attitude!

My priorities in the shooting games are safety, fun and just as important as anything, the marvelous fellowship that can be found anywhere there's a range. I don't get to the prize table too often but I have a great time.

The next time you go out, try to help someone else feel good. The rebound effect is awesome!
