I have a 229 Classic 22cal and the frame says Made in Germany. Is this one going to handle the 9mm slide and barrel well (when they become available)? I think I read somewhere that some of the frames weren't holding up to the conversion kits, ie can't handle the recoil. Thanks in advance.

I don't believe SIG ever made plastic framed P229.. There should be no problem putting a 9mm / .40S&W or 357SIG slide on it. The P229 was built around the .40S&W cartridge.
I do know that P228 frames were weaker (Built exclusively for 9mm).
Not at all, app P220/226/229 classic 22lr frame are anodized aluminium just like any other SIG. The 22lr slides are also aluminium (or a light alloy) and can be replaced by X-change kit slides in other caliber.
I believe the only polymer framed pistol SIG produces are the mosquito (which is actually made by a third party), the SIG Pro line and P250.

they take the 9mm top end fine (gunzik did it) where you will have an issue is finding a 9mm top end for it, questar doesnt import them because sig doesnt made the xchange kits with the canadian barrel (no idea if someone else does though)
fyi, my 9mm 229 top end wont work on my classic .22 so something is different. i had it figured out what was different before but its been about a year so i cant remember exactly i just know it doesnt work.

P229 Caliber xchange kits are at Questar for ... hold on to your shorts ... $636.49 plus shipping and tax. Depending on where you are, that's well over $700.
I have found some Dlask DAC-394 / P228 copy top ends that work great with minor modifications to the feed ramp to fit them. They work as well as the "real thing" of which I have several. Thanks to Bar-Sto for the inspiration to flatten the top of the barrel ring for more stability and accuracy.
What should the "Dlask Caliber X-change in 9mm" go for, new? Shipped with two mags. I have a few. Just the slide, barrel, steel recoil spring guide, recoil spring and mags. Mags are meg-gar, new.
Norinco's "copy" is of course built to different dimensions. The Dlask copies were just that: copies. Lots of writing about them on this forum. While fitting the whole pistol was a challenge, the top end came pre-assembled and works great.
Of course if you've been waiting and saving your money for the SIG logo, they have lots in stock right now at Questar!

I've seen this question pop numerous times; The P228 was built exclusively for 9mm so no conversion allows .40/357SIG.
Later came the P229 which was built around the .40 cartridge with a stronger frame.
Of course the "Part guns" P228 that were released around 2007-2010 (Which are mostly P229 Railed/SAS frames with P228 folded slide top end can probably handle bigger caliber with an exchange kit.
Good points. SAAMI 9mm +P (the faulty 228 was built for +P+) specs are 38500 psi while .40 just 35000 psi. Sig problems and the technical issues of the HK (while all spec forces in the world use their lines) are all related with the move in the US of A. Before this they never had a problem. Around here all the cops and security forces changed to .40 and the real operators still use 9mm (i know so they all have one pistol/submachine round). I will take a German made Sig before a yankee one any time and a trained guy is way more efficient than a bigger caliber. But again these is my 2c and i hope i will get me a 228 and 10k of 9mm and i will post the facts every day till the last round.
