I think the mag on the SIG is probably a Beretta AR70 mag from before they converted them to STANAG. The MG42 without the barrel likely would not even go bang.

AR70 mags have side plates (in picture no room for such) and side tabs (like HK-93).

they are skinnier and they have the block on the back. Looking at the few I have they have the same metal forming on the body like in that pic.

Funny thought, but maybe a lifejacket would stop a machete, the most popular weapon used in africa. That might explain it, light body armour, just a loud colour, and come to think of it, the people in this part of the world have traditionally gone to war in loud colours.
