There have always been expensive guns, it's the $50 plus(cheap) bulk .22lr and other ammo costs that are more likely to limit new shooters.
Maybe with Trump letting Canada know that we can't supply and defend ourselves we will see a resurgence of home grown ammo so at least we can keep the money up north!

There was 100k new PALs issued in 2023 and I suspect that trend continued into 2024 but we don't have the data for that yet. Lots of new shooters still joining the community.
But I do agree that prices are getting ridiculous and it does make the hobby/sport more cost prohibitive for the average person.
Just wait, if US tariffs at 25% come in at the end of the month, all US guns and ammo will skyrocket in price.

How US tariffs affect the price of US imported goods? How Canada would respond by punishing Canadians with Canadian tariffs - that's unknown.
Perhaps Trump's tariffs were just to make some political statements. But in a long run "supposedly" it must have some economical benefits by protecting and developing local industries. Whether the U.S. benefited from them or not is their concern—just as Canada has long protected Quebec’s dairy industry, a policy unrelated to either Trump or Biden.
With that being said, applying tariffs on US-made guns and ammo by the same theory supposed to protect Canadian gun industry. If that was really necessary - it would have been done anyways. But I don't think libs would ever consider it, as it would contradict their anti-gun ideology.
“Don’t dish it out?” Sure, but if the government's approach is just to retaliate for the sake of it, then it’s nothing more than a political stunt to earn quick points.

Political statements about what? How he feels ourselves and Mexico should live under the American thumb, ironically saying they've been ripped off by the deal he brokered, which we also sadly made concessions on to satiate his ego and make nice? Of course they aren't going to benefit from the tariffs, it's going to put a dent in their own economy as cost of living continues to sky rocket. There was nothing to be gained from pulling a stupid stunt like this aside from trying to seem like the big dog in the room.
Threatening our economy and ruining a century long friendship to blow smoke up his own ass, is a clownish behavior, if your boss pulled a similar stunt at work and burned bridges with clients that keep the lights on, you'd call him a ####ing idiot. Americans and "the west" in general benefit by having many things outsourced to countries like Mexico, China, Vietnam, etc, where quality of life is lower than ours, labor laws don't exist and as such have lower wages, ergo making things more affordable for us. Already most people elect not to buy Canadian and American made tools for example, because the cost is astronomically higher than Stanley, Mastercraft, etc. If chevy built a car that was 100% sourced, manufactured and built in the US, most people wouldn't be able to afford one in the US as the material costs alone after tarriffs would destroy their profitability, and no one would buy one outside of the US as the price wouldn't at all be competitive to foreign competitors that operate on a global production system.
America is the largest arms dealer in the world. From guns, to ammo, it would only make sense to target one of their largest revenue streams. We have Canadian ammo manufacturers here, why not buy from them? CZ makes some of the finest mass production guns in the world and at a great price, why not them?
By the same train of thought, if we have taxes levied against our products, why wouldn't you retaliate in kind to promote internal growth, development and similarly help prove the point we provide more to them than they realize? Someone punches you in the mouth, are you gonna ball up and take the beating that follows or are you swinging back? The only thing to be gained at this point is new trading partners that hold true to their word. My concern is less about the prices of things going up and rather the havoc it will create for every blue collar working class family that works in a car plant, third party production facility, etc. GM keeps people in Oshawa and surrounding areas employed at a great wage and benefit package, same with Honda in Alliston, Ford in Oakville, the steel mills in Hamilton... Amazing to see so many people harken for the days of old where you could live, build a family and retire from a job at one of these places, eager to kill it and put the final nail in the coffin and for what?

I am obviously referring to the retaliatory 25% the Libs will slap on US goods coming here...
They already said they would do so, it's not unknown.
Few comments here:
1. Tariffs is an economic tool by its original design to stabilize industries, protect jobs, and create long-term economic independence. Again, if tariffs were intended to harm neighbors in a first place, then again, why did Canada defend its own dairy industry with supply management for decades?
2. Sure, tariffs cause immediate price increases but encourage domestic investment, leading to more jobs and economic efficiency in a long run. So, if tariffs were so bad, then why so many countries including developed ones, enforce trade restrictions to successfully protect its industries in the very current moment I type this?
3. There is no "friendship" in politics on the world stage, it's partnership. Yesterday one country might be an enemy to the other, then become a partner after. Countries negotiate trade deals based on national interest, not "friendship." Invite your neighbor for BBQ and beers - that's a friendship.
4. Why Canada so fragile that one trade negotiation can bring down a whole country and ruin a century-long friendship? Or does this just reveal an overdependence on U.S. trade?
5. While outsourcing makes products cheaper, in a long term it destroys middle-class jobs and creates long-term economic instability. That's where tariffs might make economic sense. Should we sacrifice local industries for cheaper goods?
Bottom line: Tariffs do work when used strategically to protect industries that can realistically grow under protection. As it goes for guns, tariffs will do absolutely nothing good, they won't boost Canadian gun production—it will only raise prices for Canadian gun owners and will not put much of the dent on US industry.
