Hello fellow CGN members,

Introduction:

About half a year ago I finally got into a range that allows rifle shooting. Since then, I have been doing a lot of research on what precision rifle I should get while testing out as many as I could via, chatting and asking on several forums for advice and information on what rifle to get.

I wanted something good that will last me 4-5 years and then some that I can train with. I am not a bad shot but not amazing either so I need something better to hone my skills.

My research led me to SIG Sauer SSG 3000. A great gun that just got undercut and as if the stars aligned. IRG brought them in at a great price (Thanks Irunguns!)

Outfit

So here it is:

-Mounted with a Harris bipod.

Review

Please note: this is a very amateurish perspective but I'll give you what I felt about it.

What I like about it:
-Great tigger; light, responsive, no creep and easily to change trigger weight
-Pistol grip
-comes with a plastic gun case

Neutral:
-the stock, no longer McMillan, feels light but is definitely solid. Definitely feels cheap though (I guess that's what $909 cutback does)

What I didn't like:
-cheek piece feels flimsy, buttons don't work perfectly
-probably one of the most heaviest bolts actions I've handled with a synthetic stock (we are talking vanilla here, no accessories)
-pistol grips a little big, or I just have small hands

Ammunition

I don't reload, at least not yet since I just started getting into rifle. You'll see me asking about it in Reloading probably later in the year but not now.

So I swung by the nearest gun shop (lebaron) and bought every .308 they carry. Rem, Win, Hornady, cheap and match grade, 150 gr, 165 gr and 180.

From test,
it seems to like the Winchester Super X Rounds the most and grain wise 150 at 100 yards at 1 MOA

Remington Core-lokt 150 grain was okay at 2 MOA

Remington Match was a POS of 5 MOA

Hornady Supermatch DOES NOT FIT. Maybe I got a lemon but the rounds were too long and I could not close the bolt all the way with any of them.

I could probably do a lot better with hand loads and I plan to do so later.

All in all this is my review for the SIG Sauer SSG 3000.

Special thanks to:

-IRUNGUNS (for the rifle. Yes, you guys screwed up and got my hopes up for the wrong rifle but at least you finally got me my rifle.)
-Hirsch Precision for the scope, rings and mounts
-Tomochan for telling me about grizzly gunworks
-CosmiC10R for recommending the sightron
-blauber for recommedning Hirsch

Obligatory TL : DR
SSG 3000 great gun! 9/10

Beautiful rifle. I have one myself. A couple of comments. The cheek comb need to be lined up to in the set height otherwise it snaps into place when you place your cheek or moved. The stock is aluminum bedded and held on by 4 lugs from the rifle. From what IRG has told me, the stock is made by the same manufacturer for Sig unlabeled. Perhaps to keep the price point. It is also a free floating barrel.

I'm thinking about a muzzle brake too. Post back about the grizzly.

I have mine on order, and starting to act like a little kid waiting for Christmas!! I have all my brass and bullets ready to start loading for this girl, just can not decide on scope yet. For sure to let us know how that brake works for you.

By all accounts, your rifle is a LOT more capable than 1MOA. Hell, my cheap a$$ Remy 700 can do sub-MOA. TIme to get into reloading... nothing like making your own pills that are match quality at a fraction of the price of factory ammo with a lot more consistency and accuracy.

I would like to hear more about how they do with match ammo, please.

I would too. Need to go hunt for some brands to try out, but that may require a trip to bass pro (shudders)

Looks very nice! Well worth the wait I bet.

Almost...I just wish I was shooting it sooner.

The rifle is almost recoiless... JP.

Got to shoot it side by side with a Sako TRG-22 with a muzzle brake on it. I would dare say the recoil on the SSG 3000 is just a tad more but it doesn't have a brake on it...yet :p

Yeah I know I need to reload. Everyone at the range was telling me to but deep down I know it means I just shoot more....which might not be a bad thing :D

Very nice setup! I have a SSG 3000 with the same scope, Atlas BT10-LW17 bipod. I've been shooting Lapua Scenar 155 grain. Love it! It's the most accurate out of the box rifle I had ever shot. Here's mine:

Here's a 3 shot group at 200 yards:

You MUST reload if that is your best result at 100m assuming those are 1" squares. My TRG 22 easily does 3 shot group touching/cloverlead for less than 1/2 MOA. Everything I've read say the 3000 is comparable.

Well that and it could also be the shooter needs to improve as well. Don't miss the part where I started precision shooting 4-6 months ago.

It's funny you had the same issue as me with the Hornady ammo. When we were cutting the chamber on my rifle a little while ago, we tried test fitting a Hornady 178grBTHP superformance match. Same thing, bolt required some force to close. after careful inspection we found that the shoulder is set forward on the Hornady brass. Maybe they do it to compensate for loose factory chambers, dunno, but my chamber is cut SAMMI min spec and it is tight. Would the bolt not close on yours at all? Even with a bit of force? Beauty rifle BTW, have fun with it.

Loaded 3 in the mag. Manage to force only 1 in the chamber then decided it was not worth doing possible damage to the gun to use the ammo. Did notice there were light marks on the bullet head when from a failed force to close.

dont force them. I did that with one batch of my reloads and ended up with a stuck case. Had to use a guiderod to punch the empty case out afterwards. im utterly suprised that you got 5 moa out of the remmingtons. were you shooting off a bench/what kind of rests?

Nice review. I sold my Tikka T3 Sporter and bought an SSG 3000 and have been very happy with it. Someday I'll probably upgrade to a McMillan stock but for now the plastic stock is working quite nicely.

If you can find some Federal Gold Medal Match, give it a try. Mine really shoots well with their 168 gr. match load. I can only hope my .243 Win and 6.5x55 barrels will shoot as good as the .308 barrel that came with it.

Cheers
