I have a stainless 226 X5, single action only in 40 s&w.

Went to the range today, put 5 in the magazine, it shot flawlessly. Put another 5 in the mag and the trigger refuses to activate the hammer, it only moves a fraction of an inch.

Has anyone else had this problem or have any idea what could be wrong?

Will the hammer ####? If you can #### the hammer but the trigger wont release it I would suspect a broken or missplaced trigger bar spring.
Also check that the slide is going all the way forward. If the slide is not in battery the trigger bar will be disconected. You might see the hammer nudged but it will not release the hammer.

Carefully take the right grip off and see if anything looks out of place. Remove slide and inspect hammer assembly from that angle as well.

Found the problem.
This pistol has a fore and aft trigger adjustment. For some reason the trigger moved all the way to the rear position, not allowing it to move enough. The allen screw still seemed to be tight, but it obviously needed to be tighter.
Thanks for all your help.

I had the same issue with a USP Expert, with the adjustable trigger. Glad it was only a minor issue!
