Well,

After getting my ass handed to me in the past couple of precision rifle matches, I did some test firing, and my old stand-by Remington 700 just ain't cutting the mustard anymore.

Group size is now in excess of 1.2 MOA at 300m.

It used to shoot around .45 MOA.

So, I've started the process of re-barreling.

Not bad, seeing as the factory barrel has lasted me 10 years now, and probably between 6 and 8 thousand rounds fired.

Step was was the decision to finally do it.

Step two was getting the barrel. (Picked up a nice Rock barrel for it today....$ouch$)

Step 3 will be taking it to the recommended smith (already selected) for the work.

Step 4 will be a new stock, as the new barrel will NOT fit the old stock anymore.

Step 5 will be new handloads....starting from scratch again!

Step 6 will be kicking ass next season!

If your plumber does a good job on this, you'll kick yourself for not doing it sooner!

I have good faith in the plumber.

The old barrel is the original factory 700 Varminter barrel, with a tricked up stock.

The new stock will likely be an HS-Precision...I have a line on one.

As for turning it into a hunting gun and buying new...well...I'm not made of money, and there's too many other damn projects running in the background for me to afford to do that!

You've probably considered having the barrel set back and rechambered. Might give you another season or two. Catch is that the gunsmithing cost is similar to fitting a new barrel, and it might not work. But, if you have already got the new barrel....

New barrel already in hand...I didn't even consider setting it back.

The factory barrel is only a 24", and if I shortened it even more...well, my 800m performance is, uh....lacking at times already. Can you imagine what it'd do with a 22" barrel?

I'll take the new one, make it a 26"er, and go from there.

I've heard very good things about Sam Adams' work. I've stopped by his residence several times over the years when over that way but have never caught him home. I will look forward to a after action range report.

You sure Adams will be able to do it in a timely manner? I've heard some guys say it's tough getting work done by him. Never had dealings with himself before though. I know A.W. had all his rifles done there, correct?
