Hi guys, bought myself a M305 from Marstar in September. The front sight was centered on the flash hider but when I went to the range the first time it shot way to the left. The rifle grouped well so I decided to do upgrades. I did lots of reading before starting, I replace op rod spring with Wolff, Sadlak NM spring guide, BM59 rear sight, USGI flash hider, USGI stock parts, vented handguard, Boyds stock

I took the rifle out today after doing the upgrades and it is still shooting way to the left, I was hoping that the USGI flash hider and rear sights would correct the problem. I am using the original front sight from the rifle. Could having to adjust the front sight way to the left be caused from poor barrel index?

My guess would be barrel index, i'll let someone with more knowledge confirm this.
There is good info here on how to re-index a barrel, myself will buy a barrel vise to help do the job.
I wanted to say also, very nice looking rifle, it has the EXACT look i wish to obtain with my M305, ventend handguard with wooden stock is just beautiful.

Edit: where did you get the stock?
 
Until you get your barrel indexed, it is what it is. It's just cosmetic, if you bugs you enough, compensate with the rear sight so the front isn't so far over....again, in an ideal world they would both be centered, but it's cosmetic and it shoots and functions well.

Once that barrel is indexed properly, it'll likely shoot straight with the front sight centered

A good suggestion. The rifle shoots quite well as it is. Unless the op rod is binding I'd be inclined to leave it as is.
 
I would be happy to have a grouping like that....but the position of the front sight would drive me crazy. I know its only cosmetic but thats just me. Get it fixed!

The photos you show won't tell anyone anything about your indexing. The correct way is to use two parallel metal bars, one on the flat behind the far sight and one on the flash hider dovetail. Hold the front one on with a small clamp. They should be as close to 90 degrees to the bore as possible. Then look at the rifle from behind and see if the bars are parallel to each other. If they are not parallel, your indexing is wrong and you would need a gunsmith or a CGNer with a barrel and action wrench for the M14 to fix the issue. Or go to a Hungry clinic - he usually has the right tools on-hand.

If you don't have machinist's parallels (the best option), then buy some 1/4" square key stock from Canadian tire and use that - also works well enough for this and is hardened enough that it stays good and straight.

Beware though, the Norinco-unique lock screw under the op rod that prevents unscrewing of the barrel is usually staked in and you need to grind a screwdriver bit to fit it tightly or you'll never get it out without shearing the head off the screw - then you're hooped. Or you'll be headed to a smith to have it precision milled in a knee mill to remove the busted fastener. That can get expensive.
 
Thanks for the replies, I would like to attend one of the clinics but unless Tactical Teacher is coming out to Alberta it's a little hard to attend. I've looked into purchasing tools to do the job, but I would rather get it done by someone with experience.

The next question is where to send it to get done? Anyone in Alberta offer this as a service?

I'm happy with the rifle and understand it's only a cosmetic but would like to get it corrected.

I measured the group center to center. I set the caliper to bullet diameter, zero, then measure at the edges.
 
If your rifle is shooting to the left you want to move the front sight to the right. Looks like your moving it the wrong way. Rear sight you move it in the direction you want the point of impact move.
