They are very close. The picatinny rail system follows close specifications to fit any platform and offer a more flexible attachment.
You may fit any weaver stuff to a picatinny one, but the other way around is not garanteed. If the recoil lug on your mount/ring/rail grabber follows the picatinny specs, it will be too big to fit in the usually smaller weaver groove.
