Sighted in my 7x57 Mauser

As some of you may remember I purchased a Ruger M77 tang safety in 7x57 this past winter. After getting it into a Ruger wood stock again, purchasing Ruger mounts and a Vortex scope I finally broke away from farm work yesterday long enough to properly sight it in. My son in law wanted to sight in a new to him 7mm magnum Kimber so it was a good chance for both of us to have some shooting fun.

I did have the scope bore sighted in my shop but was still pleasantly surprised to find the scope in perfect L/R alignment and about 3 inches high at 25 yards with two rounds using Winchester Silver Box 145 gr. PSP.'s. I adjusted, then backed up to 100 yards. Still a bit high with 2 rounds touching and one flyer that made it a 1 MOA group. Adjusted again then fired 3 more rounds. You can imagine the grin on my face when there were 3 rounds touching in the bull at 100 yards. I stood down to let my son in law shoot.

He fired the better part of a box of ammo through his Kimber wearing a Leupold Scope using an expensive looking box of Hornady ammo. The rifle has a muzzle brake and is painfully loud. Side story: A wasp was buzzing just past his face and about two feet away from the barrel when he squeezed off a round. I was watching that wasp pretty close in case it decided to cause trouble. When that rile fired it looked like that bug had been fired out of a cannon. WHAM....it was GONE!
After most of the box he parked the rifle with his father in law (me) teasing him about settling for MOM (Minute of Meat) accuracy. I know it burned because he is an exceptional shooter with tons of training.

So the Ruger 7x57 had no real surprises other then very good accuracy. Typical stiff trigger, not much difference in recoil between the 7x57 and my 270 in the same rifle. Having owned a Ruger M77 since the 70's I admittedly have a bit of a soft spot for them. If I was a paper puncher, or had accuracy OCD, I suppose I could pursue some changes. But as it stands this little rifle will hold it's own on the range or out hunting and that satisfies me. I look forward to shooting it some more, but I really look forward to the day that I can give it to one of my 13 grandchildren.

Now if I can get some ammo loaded up for my 257 Roberts.......

If you load for the 7x57 try Win 760/mag primers and a good 140gr bullet. RE#22 for a stiff 160gr Partition load.

In my Ruger M77 MKII and No.1-A 7X57's RL-19 is the best powder I have tried with 150/154's, W760 is a close second. RL-19 is excellent in my M77 MKII Robert's also.

I don't know much about the 7x57 except for my experience shooting it for the first time the other day. Dad made up some rounds using 130 grain bullets and 4350 powder. Shot them the other day. Very soft shooting and 5 of them could have been covered with a quarter. Very impressed.

Thanks for the load suggestions guys. I don't currently load for the 7x57 but it is something I want to get around to doing. I was hoping to try a bullet in the 140 gr. area and a softer load.

I didn't think that 257 Roberts ammo would be so difficult to find but I did manage to buy dies, bullets and brass on here. I think I will pick up some RL-19 then find time to head to the reloading bench.

I also have a new Mauser 6.5x55 that I assembled a couple of years ago with help from the good folks at TEC. It has been sighted in but needs some more attention. A new set of dies in the cupboard for that rifle as well.

Now to find a 260 Rem and a 250 Savage.

Try RL-22 with your 6.5X55.

Great well balanced calibre, that's why I have eight 7x57's. Just picked myself up a BRNO 21H in 7x57 too!
7x57 will take anything in North America with proper bullet choice & shot placement. 154-175gr bullet weights generally work the best. That being said my Interarms Mark X loves 145gr bullets.
Enjoy your 7x57.

Well considering the fact that "Karamojo Bell" killed approx 800 of the 1011 elephants that he is estimated to have shot in his lifetime with a .275 Rigby, which is a 7x57 in disguise, there is no reason to think that the same caliber couldn't kill any game in North America. However an article that I read did attribute the comment that the 7x57 was a "surgeon's rifle" to WDM Bell as well, which would mean shot placement is key.

I am really looking forward to spending more time using the rifle.

Several years ago I read his story on how he was able to accomplish that. He studied the elephant's skull and found a cavity just behind the ear which exposed the brain to a lethal shot, and that's where he used to shoot them. He did mention that if the elephant got wind of you or became "anxious" then you needed to have someone with a bigger gun!

Yes the 7x57 wasn't an elephant charge show stopper.
Loads for modern or 98 mauser rifles only not for 93 or 95 mausers or Rem rolling blocks[these are for my BRNO21H] 160gr Partition/50gr RE#22/Win brass/Fed mag primer.......3 bullets same hole 140gr Hornady/same brass and primer/48gr Win 760.....3 shots touching making one tear......49grs still 3 shots under 1/2" I don't target shoot with this gun as it is too predictable to be challenging.

The actual article where he said that. Click on the link towards the bottom of the page for the full PDF article.

I've got a tang safety Ruger 77 in 7x57mm that I scored off the EE here many years ago. It will do sub 1" 3 shot groups. So, the ctg & that have made me keep 'er all these years.
