Sighting in a 22mag.......question?

I just picked up a Savage 93 GL, put a scope on it and headed to the range.

I'm shooting Winchester DynaPoint 45gr HP through it. I'll be trying a few different brands until I get the right one, but I'm wondering about the results from the Winchester stuff.

At 25 yards, the groupings were dead-on, about the size of a dime.

At 100 yards, the groupings were all over the place, a group of three might fit under a dinner plate!

Conditions were ideal, no wind, 0 degrees.........

The barrel cooled between groups. I was shooting off a rifle rest.

Ammo or scope? I certainly hope it's not the shooter! :)

caper, reread your post, I am betting the second reference to 25 yards was in fact farther. If that is the case, that is not uncommon for rimfire ammo what shoots well close range does not mean it shoots well at distance. you really have to find out what ammo shoots well at distance in your rifle.
 
range is marked out at 25yd, 50yd and 100yd.......not sure how accurate it is.

my buddy shoots cci, might try that.

any other recommendations on ammo?

In my cz the best was hornady 30gr vmax(1-1.5" at 100). Never even looked at winchester as it sucks in every other gun I have. Second best was hornady 25gr ntx then cci tnt. all the other cci stuff was shotgun pattern isn ~4" groups at 100. The federal classic was ~1.5-2" at 100.
 
The Dynapoints are crap....

I have not so great results with them as well. They are also pretty slow moving as far as 22 mag velocities go.

I have fount the CCI Maxi Mag HP's and Hornady Vmax work much better, but my gun seems to prefer the CCI's.

25 to 100m is a big jump, especially with the way weather conditions will affect a 22 mag. Just because there isn't gusty wind where you are you never know what's happening down range unless you're usin flags.

Before you even bother sighting the gun in, I would shoot a bunch of groups with various brands at 50m to see which ones work best. As long as they all hit the target. You can compare groups from there, and you aren't leaving as much variables open such as wind, and weather. Pick the top 2 or 3, then move out to 100, and pick the best one.

Now you can worry about dialing the gun in with the ammo you know should be grouping pretty well. ;)
 
this is all great information.

i was with my buddy this year when he was shooting his 22mag, and he was getting great groups out at 100 yards.

i'm not really familiar with that round, other than a revolver i owned years ago.

Never really bothered for group size but my t-bolt will paste gophers out to 150 with those cheap dynapoints all day. It's not real picky. I personally love the Winchester premium hollow points or the cci TNT +p stuff. Turns em inside out.
 
Could be the ammo...could be the scope...may need more break in.
I've been shooting the 93FVSS for a year now. When I first got it 4" groups at 100m were pretty standard.
First I tried every ammo under the sun. Found that the Hornady V-Max and Remington Accu-Tips were the best (mine likes the Rem just a little bit more).
Down to 2.5 in groups.
The someone mentioned that the Bushnell rimfire scope that came with the gun had a set parallax at 50yds (it was dead accurate at that distance).
So last fall I replaced the Bushnell with a Hawke Tactical (about $200 more than the gun).
Now 2" is standard, and on a windless day if I really take my time I can put 5 shots in 1" at 100m.
 
My Winchester 61 loves the Winchester 40gr. JHP stuff (X22MH). These are a true cup and core bullet, not plated like the DynaPoint. It also shoots the older Federal Premium 30gr. Speer TNT HP (P765) pretty darn well.
 
Winchester ammo is crap. Get some CCI> i had win ammo jam up my bolt action. Same with my friend. Says he seen cracked cases etc. CCI has special on .$54 for a 250box
