Sighting in issue

I was trying to sight in a Marlin 1895 (JM stamped) last night that I put a Leupold Vari-XII 1x4 scope on and it’s hitting 4” low at 25 yards and I’m out of vertical adjustment. Any suggestions of what I can do here? The mounts are Talley’s, btw.
 
Assuming the scope isn't the problem you could try Burris Signature Zee rings with the plastic inserts to put some vertical cant into the scope mount. They work quite well but I think you would need new bases also. Check the scope first as it seems strange that it is maxed out of adjustment at that range.

Thanks but how would I check a scope, other than turning the adjustment until it stops turning?

Could be the “Marlin droop”, but I’ve never heard of it on an 1895.

Ruling out the scope as the issue, the most cost effective solution would be to shim the base as others have said. Or maybe grab a positive MOA scope base.
 
Scope misalignment with the barrel could be less severe (or non-existent?) with this set up since the mount utilizes the barrel. Here's my GBL with the XS Lever Scout Mount.

Almost identical to the set up I have. The GBL is the same but on my XS lever rail, the ghost ring rear sight is part of the rail and rail is a little longer. My scope is a Hi-Lux 2-7x32. I've posted this info in previous threads. I had a 1895GS but was never to pleased with the straight stock design. Gave it to my Son and replaced it with the GBL.

I would run the turrets through the entire range top to bottom a couple times just in case it is sticking somewhere. It might be fine but the vari-x is an older model so it is possible there is an issue with it.
If after that if you are still concerned you could send it into Korth and they will check it out, it will only cost you the shipping one way.
 
When a scope doesn't have sufficient adjustment to zero vertically, Ted suggested using a shim cut from a hotel room key, I tried it with my 9.3 Husky and it worked like a charm. Shooting low, shim under the rear base, shooting high, shim under the front base.

1) Target error X Ring spacing / range = shim needed

Use the same unit all the way through, ie inches for everything.

2)Red-neck no math option. 4 inch ring spacing will give 1" of 100 yard correction per .001".
 
When I had that problem with one of my rifles I used an aluminium pop can cut into strips to try, after I had a decent level I replaced them with Z-rings as mentioned earlier for a permanent fix
 
Call Leupold with the serial number and find out what the scope is designed for
with regards to elevation adjustments.

I ran into this problem last year with an older Leupold scope.
I sent it in figuring it was pewched.
They called to let me know this particular model had a short elevation
adjustment.
They replaced it with a new scope even though I told them to send it back.
My problem, not theirs if the scope was in fact okay.
They decided to not listen to me and send me a new scope.

I truly enjoy their products and their great customer service.
 
Shim geometry. If ring spacing is 4" = d, then at 100 yards -

t = H/900 = 0.00111H ~ 0.001H

t = 0.001H

Example: if correction needed H = 10" at 100 yards then required shim thickness t = 0.001 x 10 = 0.01" :)
