Hi all,

How do I properly sight in my AR using iron sights to 100 yards? Is there a special tool available to adjust the front sight pin? My understanding is that most AR's are zeroed to 300 yards.

Thanks

Power_Pill is correct, start at 25 and make sure your in the ball park.

You likely will never need to adjust your front sight, both lateral and vertical adjustments can be made on the rear sight.

On the off chance you feel the need to adjust the front post you can. You don't need a tool, but they exist. This is what they look like.

FYI: I have this tool and have never used it.

Thanks gents.

My buddy in the Canadian forces is showing me how to shoot the rifle their way in a stand up position so I think we will start at 25 yrds.

I just mounted an eotech to mine and sighted it in on the weekend....
Easy start point is to drop the lower a bit....remove the bolt so you can see down the barrel..... while looking through the barr, line up with your target and fix the rifle so it does not move.... then adjust the sights to match.

Gets you on paper then you can fine tune it.

dont stand to zero, you'll be there all day. just drop a sandbag or 6 on the bench and put 3 rds down at the same POA.

Remember 1/4" @ 100 = 1" @ 25, youll be good.

or just get the irons rough zeroed and get yourself a decent optic. ( asuming your rifle is a flat top)

If you only your rear sight to zero you will have a rear sight not zero'd! What target are you using to zero on?

Set your rear sight to 300 (3/8) then use your front sight for your elevation adjustments to zero! If you zero at 200m on a 18" wide by 22" high target (Standard size for a fig 12), zero your rifle so it will strike centre using a 6 oclock hold. Using this system you can take the same sight picture at 300m and for 100m simply taking abut 1/3rd of your target into the front sight. This is called "Leveling your trajectory", work quite well.

Zero at 25m. Point of Aim (POA) should be center of above target. Point of Impact (POI) should be 1.5-2 inches below, as indicated on target above. This will give you a POA and POI for 100m. (This will work for metres or yards as they are very close in size.) 100m zero will give hits out to 300m in a combat effective zone (8 inches) and hits in at bad breath distance. However, you will have to use hold overs in close. Height over bore relation, etc. With the 100m zero, all your holds will be over or above the POI. This is easy to do and remember, especially under stress.
Whatever zero you use:
Do zero from the prone at 25 and confirm at 100. Boresighting is good to get you on paper, but live is better.
Do zero both irons and optics separately.
Don't just put the red dot on the top of the front post and be done with it. You must confirm it live. Use the same hold and position for both.

You will need to adjust your front sight post for elevation and the rear apperature adjusts for windage. Unless you are using an A2 style rear sight, which you should dump at you earliest opportunity. lol

Anyway, my $0.02. There is a ton of info on M4 Carbine on this as well as Lightfighter.
Google "The Zen of the 100m Zero."
In the end, YMMV.
