Sighting target

I'm getting mixed messages, I'm realitivly new. When I first started I shot with one eye closed, after some research in told it helps to keep both eyes open and focus on the front sight. Iv noticed I am shooting better but at times I'm seeing 2 targets which obviously isn't the greatest. Some people say with the iron sights you should close one eye. Any tips or pointers would be great. Thank you

welcome aboard.
hopefully your dominate eye is your shooting eye. time and practice will help with target acquisition. some people will always shut one eye, some will not. it all depends on the person, I don't think there is any set rule on this.
the big thing with iron sights is focusing on the front sight only, again, practice will help with that. lots of lead down range is the best help you'll find.
have fun, don't sweat the little things...unless its a flinch, you have to work on that one lol.

I'm cross dominant so I move the pistol over to the other eye (I know, super hi-tech solution eh? lol). As for shooting with both eyes open, do whatever makes you better. There are no set rules, what works for one might not work for another. If you decided to continue to shoot with both eyes open (which I do recommend) the image ghosting should go away with practice.

I think a quote like this by a world class shooter says it all...

"I spent several years learning to shoot with both eyes open. But in the end I didn't feel I shot any better that way. So I went back to the tape. One eye, as long as it is always open while you are shooting, is all you need."

Thanks guys, the guy at the range said you should only keep both open with a red dot. it's only my second time going, the first time the target wasn't doubled at all, then I went back today and got quicker at focusing on the front sight only but was seeing double targets in the peripheral down range. I did however shoot better at 25 yards with both eyes open then with closing one. Good to know tho, I'll keep to both eyes open for now.

Yea I'm right hand right eye dominant. I got over the flinch, iv been going to the range for a couple months now. Just started to work on stance and grip and some basics

There is a focus training tool you can make with string and some beads. Also, when you get a ghost image at the range just wink your non dominant eye to regain the sight picture.

P.S. You never fully get rid of a flinch, it's like a gremlin. When you feel it creeping back in just use the ball and dummy drill to help keep it at bay.

My friends who are into tactical shoot with two eyes open. They feel that approach is more readily available and it makes sense too have both eyes in operation to be able to see what’s coming at you. I bullseye shoot and shoot with both eyes open but use a shield to prevent strain... I don’t think you can hit a dime consistently using botheyes. In tactical it doesn’t matter, your target is the size of a frisbee....

My background is bullseye shooting, so have always closed my left eye.

I was shooting a IPSC course of fire that was all very close range targets, so speed was a bigger issue than accuracy. It would be hard to miss the bull at 5 yards.

My fibre optic front sight was very bright, and I found that I could shoot well with both eyes open and just casually put the front sight on the center of the target. Did not have to aim the sights or focus on the front sight.

It went very smoothly, quickly and accurately.

I have not tried this at longer ranges.
