I thought I should let everyone know about my dealings with Sightron via Hirsch Precision.

First, and foremost, rest assured that Hirsch Precision (Peter and Donna) provided stellar service.
They are both professional and a real pleasure to deal with. Both went to bat
for me when dealing with Sightron. My congratulations to both.

I'll keep my report short and sweet.
Purchased a Sightron 20X50X60 many years ago, excellent scope, very happy with it.
A few years ago, my basement shelf colapsed and damaged the scope.
It was sent to Sightron and was repaired, new parts and a complete test, the price for the repairs
was suprisingly low.
Unfortunatly, the side focus was VERY difficult to turn and there was a spec of dust left
on the inner lens. The point of clear focus also shifted, and was not centered within the tube.
(Many shooters tried it, and confirmed the problems)
I advised Hirsch Precision that next time it needs repair, I would like it fixed.
They offered to send it back, and repair it, I decided to wait.

Skip forward a few years.
Decided to send my scope in for repairs to side focus and the shifted point of clear focus.
With the boxed scope and copy to Hirsch Precision was a letter explaining that I would
like a few minor cosmetic problems repaired, since these repairs are not covered by warranty,
I offered to pay for them. My request was clear: "I would like the scope to look new as well
as perform like new, if this service is available, please charge my Visa card.
Please take all the time you need, as I will not be using my scope till next year"

The scope was returned in short order with a repair report. It was checked and no problems found.
The side focus was repaired and is now much easier to use.
The spec of dust is still there, clearly visible. The point of clear focus is STILL shifted off center axis.
None of the cosmetic repairs I asked for were considered or offered.

I again contacted Hirsch Precision and again, I was asked to send it back for further repairs.
I decided to sell the scope, with full disclosure, and purchase a Night Force from Hirsch, of course.

Since this is NOT a complaint but simply a report, I would again, like to thank Donna and Peter for
all the work involved and for putting up with me.

CGN'eners, please let me know what you think, was I unreasonable?, too demanding?, Anal? High expectation?
Any comments would be appreciated, and please respect the great service provided by Hirsch, there are only
so many strings they can pull.

Cheers,

Wow good job Domna and Peter. Sounds outstanding. Sightron has few lemons. Atleast you had warrenty on an old scope! My gruess is that maybe your model is so old they don't have the parts to rebuild you one. So scopes as you know only come with a limited 1 year warrenty so atleast they fix the side focus.
I have the same scope in FCH. Love it!

I agree peter and Donna are great to deal with ! I'm sure every one here knows that much..

On to the scope . I think you were being completely reasonable . Especially since you were PAYING for the repairs . I do t see why sightron didn't fix what you had asked them to.. I mean as a company to make money I don't see why they wouldn't .. As far as I'm concerned if I wanted to send my still in box SB back to Germany and pay to have them disassemble look at it and reassemble for no reason you'd think as a company they would and charge accordingly . So no idea why sightron would just send it back saying it's fine .. My best guess would be you got a service tech on a bad day who didn't have the patience for finely adjusting lense alignment .

At that point it's cheaper for them to just to give you a new scope.

No idea why they wouldn't do that. (model no longer available?)

Nope, doesn't sound like you were unreasonable at all. You offered to pay for cosmetic repairs etc and offered them a well reasonable amount of time in order to do repairs etc that was not corrected during the first inspection.

Surprised that the optics weren't cleaned and aligned but I have never seen any alignment issues????

as for cosmetics, if you talking about scratches and dings, the knobs can be replaced and you can just buy them. The tube cannot. There is no way to fix the tube except to replace at which point, it is less money for you to buy a new scope.

The repair center is to fix internal issues. External cosmetics are not warrantied and there is no capacity to do "body work" in NA.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jerry, a very reasonable answer regarding the physical repairs.
Wonder why Sightron did not just sum it up, and communicate it, such as you have.
I would be happy with a negative answer, actually, any communication.

Cheers, and Jerry, it is always a pleasure to read your posts, I've learned plenty from them.

I've just recently sent in a SIII sightron for a stiff side focus adjustment knob and a problem with getting a clear focus past 6-700 yards at the higher mags....Now, I've got my fingers crossed the repairs will be done under warranty.
+1 with Hirsch and Mystic offering top notch service.

Good or bad, that is part of very rapid growth. As a percentage, I feel the return rate has not changed - which is pretty darn good in the industry - but when your volume skyrockets, the sheer number of files jump. There simply isn't enough time in the day to respond to each and every case.

That is for the dealer to service their customers. And sometimes we get pretty darn busy to do that to the level we know we can....

Success can have its downsides.

I've got 4 SIII's. They all have super tight side focus knobs. It bugs me but I live with it because I love the rest of the scope if I thought it was an option to get it fixed right I would have done it. Anybody else out the with this problem?

The irony is the first gen scopes had very easy moving side focus adjustment and was criticised.

This stiffer side focus is a by product of the redo.

It does work well once you get used to it. A bit of loosening happens with use but I like the fact that it will not be easily knocked out of adjustment.

I don't really notice the stiffness while bench shooting but in a hunting situation it becomes slightly more pronounced. The windage and elevation knobs are so nice that when switching from dialling them to the side focus it feels like its in concrete. Shooting off a pack or shooting sticks seems to make it a bit worse as well. Like I said IMO there isn't anything out there that can compete with the SIII for the price and if they went just a little lighter on the side focus they would be perfect (for me).
