I recently bought a Puma M92 in .357mag. It works beautifully. But the rear sights are very wide and seem to be difficult to line up with the front. I bought the gun to do Cowboy Action Shooting. I have read that a lot of people are experiencing the same situation. What are you guys replacing them with? Help!!!!

Threw away the fairly useless open rear sight on mine and replaced it with a Lyman receiver sight. MUCH better sight picture, precise adjustments, and accurate even with aging eyes. With the new sights I can hold 2-3" groups at 100 yds with most loads.

Nothing, the sites on the puma are perfect for Cowboy Action. Put the front site dot right in the bottom of the "V" of the rear site and Bob's your uncle. This nifty rear site allows for super quick target acquisition. When shooting at 18" x 18" steel plates at 15 yards (most common distance), you really only need to just see the front site anywhere between the V up rights of the rear to hear it go "gong!!!". There will be no 50 or 100 yard shooting in SASS. If in the odd case you have a longer than 15 yard shot, just get the front site further down in the V, that's it. Just practice with the gun, you'll see what I mean.

The rear fiber optic sights on my Puma 454 Casull was the worst piece crap I have ever used removed it and installed a spare Marlin 1895 rear sight that I had.

It now works great...

Hey Prestwich!!! Sorry
CAS targets are really that close!
I thought that the rifle targets would have been more like in the 3o meter range. I`m pacticing at 50 to be sure. I`ll try your recomendation.
Thanks:D:D

Yup, me three- Puma M92- line up the front bead on target, then use the lower VEE notch. Make sure the rear site is all the way to the rear on the stepped ramp. Gong every time.

Furthest I've ever seen a target is about 25 yards, most are about 10-20 yards, but smaller than pistol targets. If they are the same size, just line up the front site and shoot away!

Agreed, flushing it down the toilet would be too good for it. I ordered a stock one, and use a Marble's tang sight as well. Take the eye cup out of it and it works well as a ghost ring.

All the discussion I can find on these is about the rear sight, what about the front? I find it equally useless and would like to change it, but the counterstaff at Western Gun Parts told me that any standard dovetailed sight would not fit and the Rossi dealer doesn't bring in spares.

Has anyone changed the front sight on a Puma? What did you use and how did it work?

I am just adding in a follow up January 22 so that the info is available on a search, in case someone else needs it.

First of all, Steve's Gunz never responded to my email. I did not try calling.

I ordered a Marble's 95 rear sight and Marble's barrel mount white bead front sight from Brownells. The front sight went in perfectly, going half way with finger pressure and just taking a few taps via a brass drift to get to centre. So much for the opinion from WGP, which I really was skeptical of from the get go.

The rear sight, on the other hand, was a pain. The barrel dovetail had a large indentation on the back edge that looked like someone had peened it to tighten it up. Several passes of the sight dovetail on SiC paper were required to get the sight started, and I wish I had gone back a couple more times, because I had to pound that sucker to get it all the way in. It's there and it looks good now, though.

I find the red fiber optic front sight on my rifle very usable for my needs have absolutely no interest or need to change it.

Give Steve a call at Steve's gunz...He is super friendly and knows a fair bit about the pumas...
He sells sights that will work and will also steer you in the right direction as far as other options!
Camp's .454 has different sights then the other pumas which have a buckhorn style rear and and a brass bead up front...what don't you like about your front sight?
Fibre optic is nice, I've got a few that I really like but after fibre optic I think my next favorite is a brass bead because it seems to show up well against different targets. Size is a personal choice and height can need adjustment if you change rear sights (peep) or to regulate your favorite load to the steps on the elevator.
I talked with Steve last year about some issues I had with my gun and he was happy to offer help and advice and this year I called and ordered some ejector springs and one of his metal followers.

This gun is also the .454 with the plastic crap sights. I find any kind of plastic sight to be nauseating (almost offensive, actually), an issue that is exacerbated by the fact that they are often red or orange, and I am red-green colour-blind, so using a red sight against a foliated background is the equivalent of no sight at all.

I will try this fellow to see what he can tell me.

Hey,

Any CAS that is done with SASS rules and they are. I just finished the SASS range officer course. I find the 45 Colt that I use is very flat shooting (or seems so in such a short distance). I practice at 25 yards because this is what my range has. Like someone else said, sometimes you can get some "specialty" shots out to 20 or so yards, but those are usually very large targets like a simulated back end of a stage coach for example. Hamilton Club is building a range which is like a real western town. Usually the rifle and pistol targets are the same size (about 18" by 18" or there abouts) but usually bigger when in the shape of a cowpoke bad guy (and hits to the extremities count too). Sometimes though the rifle targets are smaller due to some "splash back effects" if they can't be covered enough to prevent it. Where I shoot now is indoor for the season and the rifle ones are a bit farther back and about 12" square due to the reason to prevent too much lead splatter hitting back at the shooting line. I think you should be very happy with your puma as it is.

I went to the gun club with my Puma M92 454 Casull 20" barreled rifle today here a pic of the first 3 shots at a 100 yard target.

Load was 240gr XTP-Mag's/Rem 7.5 primers/30grs H110/lee Factory crimp die crimp/average velocity was 2350fps

Sights were red fiber optic front and Marlin 1895GS rear target is 1" increments, the other 2 shots/holes are load developement with my new shortend to 20" Rem 700 LSS 30-06.
