Well, here I am in Whitehorse for a hunting and fishing trip............
We finally got up to a bit of fishing yesterday after some lost time while Air Canada found my luggage.
Four days in the same set of clothes was getting a bit tedious........
I am staying with a buddy of mine up here, to whom I had introduced WhyNot a few years ago when my buddy moved north. Yesterday the three of us went to Atlin Lake in BC for lakers. They have an interesting way of fishing up here, using heavy line and six ounce lead sliding weights on a rod/reel set-up that we might use down in Ontario for down-rigging. It is, to say the least, an inexact science, since one never knows exactly where one's lure is running. And without a graph it was really like fishing blind. We caught a couple trout, and I am pleased to report that yours truly caught the first and biggest.
I reckon that a boat equipped with riggers and a good graph would be AWESOME on that lake. It is a fair run from here though.............but on the plus side, you are allowed to hunt from your vehicle in the Yukon, and your firearm can be loaded (mag only, none in the chamber), so in effect the drive is also a hunt of sorts. On our way there, we saw one small black bear but no moose or caribou (for which I have tags). Also saw a couple bald eagles and a coyote.
Today's plan is still up in the air, as we got home late and my buddy is still sawing logs. I am thinking that we should return to Atlin Lake but there are a dozen other choices in the area, so we shall see. WhyNot was hoping we would catch a thirty pound plus laker to show off here on Gun Nutz but so far there are no bragging pics.
Maybe today!
Tomorrow we are off to Haines, Alaska (about a four hour drive) for halibut. I have never fished for these fish, nor have I ever caught one - and for me, this will be the highlight of the trip! I have caught lots of lakers, salmon, etc etc, and have shot a moose before, but never caught a halibut. If we get some success, I will see if Phil can post pics. My camera needs the hardware that is back in Kingston before I can post pics......
And then off to Keeno (not sure of that spelling) for moose, and depending on how that goes, then an attempt for mountain caribou. I bought a gun out here from RockChucker, and WhyNot sighted it in for me, God bless him! I was out to the local range yesterday with the gun, and with a slight windage adjustment it is now dead on at 200 metres. This is a Ruger 77 Mark II in .350 Rem Mag, and I am shooting 225 grain Nosler Partitions. The gun speaks with some authority.
After I whaled the 200 metre "chicken" silhouette, it was time to try the 500 metre "ram" silhouette. I did not think that the .350 was up to the task, but Ted assured me that it was. I held about two feet high, and the shot was "close but no cigar." The dust had barely cleared when out of the woods came a real ram, a Dall sheep, who then started to head-butt the silhouette!!!!!! Only in Whitehorse, you say!
Although it was an awful temptation, the live ram was left alone and we packed up the guns.
So wish me luck and hopefully within a bit I will be able to report back with tales of giant halibut and monster moose. Heck, some of the tales might even be true!
