Signing in from The Yukon

Yukon

Hi, hope you have a fantastic time you lucky .... :)

My Mrs. told me we need a caribou mount to hang on the wall after seeing one at the taxidermist. Next year is the year, I'll probably have a big gun sale in order to afford it :(, but I think it will be worth it.

Good luck on your fishing and hunting. Play safe.:D

That 788 in 358 would be perfect for that neck of the woods. :)

I took a 760 in 358 as a back-up rifle, but ended up selling it to a fellow who gave it to his son who was giuding at the time.

well Uncle Doug have fun, kind of ironic but the boys and I are on our way to prince rupert halibut and northern koho fishing tommorow as well.

good luck up there and talk to you when you get home

Well guys, now you know what he's been doing with all the money you send him for those rifles.

Some day maybe I'll win a lottery, until then, good luck Doug, I'm looking forward to lots of pics, and (hopefully) believable stories.

Must be in the air, Bones. We just got back from our coho/halibut trip to Prince Rupert. Limited out then headed back next day :D (15 hour drive each way )

Eating size northern coho & halibut...yummy :)

lucky man!!

enjoy your trip there, I actually had the opportunity to go there to help a friend compete in dog races...

wish i'd gone now...

wish you the biggest of halibuts

There might be Internet in Haines, but I was not looking for a place to go play on the computer....

The Haines trip was interesting, and the scenery was glorious, but the halibut charter was a bust. We did not get out with the charter captain that we booked, he sent a substitute - and that lad was not all that interested in much of anything. We did not catch a thing, nor did any of us have a bite that was likely to have been a halibut. We did have bait stealers working the baits pretty constantly - probably crabs and flounders, but who knows. Our substitute skipper did say that Haines has had a very (VERY) poor halibut season, with low numbers of fish, and there is talk of a closure for them in that area. Too bad the guy we booked with did not tell us that before we made the drive.................

But we bought a couple cheap rod/reel combos after we got off the charter boat and hit the Chilkoot River for pink salmon. The river is full of sockeye, zillions of pinks, and the odd coho. We landed five pinks, had countless other fish on but lost them, and generally had a very good time before heading back here to Whitehorse. Phil's son Sean came with us (he is 13) and young Sean caught a monster male pink salmon, probably eight or maybe even nine pounds, very big for this species.

Unfortunately my digital camera picked yesterday to pack up and stop working entirely. :( I am not sure what is wrong with it, the batteries are fine but the machine does not "do" anything at all, no lights no camera no action. I hope I don't lose the pics that are in the camera already! We will see if Phil has a digital camera, I know he has a video camera since it was put to good use yesterday on the Chilkoot. Anyways there are always disposable cameras and my young lad can scan in the pics once we get home.

And we leave today for Keno City for moose. :) And mountain caribou. And Phil has tags for black bear and grizzlies. And birds open tomorrow so we might take the opportunity to shoot some ducks and grouse, while filling in our free time with grayling fishing. You might say this one is a bit of a smorgasbord trip......:p

Reckon I will check in once we are back from Keno. I don't think they have Internet there, let alone computers..................

Yes JYC I am indeed spending money like a drunken sailor and will have to sell about ten good guns to pay for the Matercard bill when it gets here. Watch for September's Gun of the Month Club ad!

So wish me luck again, and I will report back in after our Keno trip.

Yes, and you will wonder why they called it Keno City.

Kind of a cool place actually. I'd like to live there for a year, maybe more. :)

Was up there 2 weeks ago fishing and having a look around.
Best pizza I've had in a long time.
Plus the mining museum is across the street, had to do the "tourist" thing as well.
Beautiful, rugged country up there.

When I was there in 1998, we stopped on the way back from Mayo for one of those monster burgers at Braeburn Lake. Best burger I've ever had, bar none!

One of the guys that was there with us bet me that if I could eat two, he would buy both. I accepted the bet, but soon changed my mind when the 1st one came to the table. Those puppys were as big as a spare tire, with enough lettuce and other stuff in there to make a side salad. :)

With all the hunting opportunities up there you need a more versatile gun like this.16x16 over 8x57R.You can load 1 slug 1 bird shot 1 8x57 .Or if you feel under gunned with 1600 lbs of hate hiding in the bush , you can leave out the bird shot ;)

Well thats the 4th person this year I have heard got screwed by a charter boat, crappy deal Doug, next year give us a call you can go out with us, we didnt get out of the harbour until about 7:30am due to the weather 8 foot swells on the outside passage so we stayed inside, had 2 koho in about 10 minutes and lost 4 others, around 11am we took off for halibut, william had a 50 in the boat in 10 minutes I had a 40 about 5 minutes later and within the next 2 hours we had landed a tottal of 4 more between 20-35 pounds bringing our raw meat weight up to 128 pounds in the freezer then went back for koho and banged 2 more ho's and 1 pink, it poured rain almost all dam day on us , and the winds came and went to were we thought we would have to head in but we managed a tottal of about 5 hours of fishing, the boys first ocean trip and they had the time of there lives, with everything from sharks to manOwar jelly fish and a huge skate came up from the bottom, William wound up with the biggest halibut , Chris wound up with the biggest ho (no northerns yet) but it was all good, didnt get alot of pics but a few when I had time to grab the camera, no halibut pics, as fast as they hit the boat they were in the cooler, we were after meat and our limit asap before the weather kicked back up, then we had the joys of finding out someone stole the crab traps so no crabs this trip :

why I hate sharks!

Well.........................

We had pizza in Keno, and I was the live entertainment on both Friday and Saturday nights. (No BS, I actually can sing...) A lot of the tourists thought I was a real sourdough, even though I told anybody who would listen that I am an Ontario boy. Seems when you have the whiskers and a certain "weathered" look that you "MUST" be a local. I reckon it was a compliment. :p

Paul, we did not stop in Braeburn for a burger, both times we went through we were not hungry, and there is no sense trying to eat a one pound burger if you are not hungry! :puke:

We saw a very nice bull moose yesterday but he was the best part of a mile up a mountain and long story short we did not make contact. Phil saw one other bull, also too far for a shot (or to get the meat back out) and we saw three other moose, two cows and a calf. Only bulls are legal in the Yukon. :(

This is gorgeous country and a fellow could easily spend a year or more up here. I have seen a fair few miles since I got here, both from a vehicle and by shanks mare. It is a rugged place and I know why Sam McGee got hooked on it.

But sadly there are no "victory" pics coming. Maybe the pinks? I do not recall what is even in the camera any more, too many memories in too short a time.

God willing, I will be back home Thursday night and can check in again with any pics that I do have.

Doug
