Well, I know I still have a long way to go, but every trip I make seems to be getting better.

I shot the following targets today, (ran out of printed targets so I modified some range ones to the approx dimensions)

Here's what was shot at 7 yards.

And at 10 yards

and about 17 yards

What do you guys think? I think I might need to slow down at the shorter ranges to tighten the groups up, but everything seems to be progressing at longer ranges.

I started practicing in a more regimented fashion as well, only load 3 rounds, shoot, reload, shoot 3 more, done. Reholster and try again. I also feel like my sight alignment is coming more naturally too, but still could use some work. And today I incorporated some kneeling and leaning as well.

some people may laugh because they thinkyou should be able to shoot all rounds into a dime sized group....

for ACTION shooting, whichever one you want, you want to be able to consistantly land all of your rounds on an 8-10" circle and that will give you a clean score.... as long as your getting your rounds in that area your doing great.

now work on getting all your rounds in that same area from unconventional positions, leaning around cover, shooting while moving forward and backward and while moving laterally, shoot from the prone postion, from on your back shooting up between your knees and from on your side laying onthe ground shooting beneath a 2"x4" about 12 inches off the ground.

sure accuracy work is good, but there is a point where "acceptable" accuracy is good and your speed is still fast..... you need a good balance of both.

one good exercise to practice is to take a cardboard IDPA/IPSC targets and put 10x 1" dots on it, I just use the store bought ones, practice drawing and firing and hitting that 1" dot..... start at 3 meters and once you are confident at that range move the target back back 2 meters..... work on your speed and accuracy, make sure you hit the dot your aiming at.

the biggest thing is getting your pistol sighted in for where YOU shoot.... so make sure to take the time to insure that your gun is goodto go.

hope that helps.

Love and Hugs

Wes

Thanks for the advice Wes :)

Unfortunately shooting from unconventional positions is limited because of firing line rules and range policies. But I will be talking with the chair to get a dedicated IDPA practice night and then the action shooters can work pure drills.

Until then, I'll keep plugging away :50cal:

you should get a Matt Burkett DVD. A good one is the "how to practice dvd". Lots of printable files for practice.

At 5 to 7 yards we should aim for making one big hole. At 25 yards all in the A zone.

These groups are much better than the others you posted.
Work on making the single perfect shot. Stick on aiming marks are a good idea. Once you can fire a slow string of perfect shots, work at firing faster, work at bringing the pistol up and firing, etc. Try for all shots in one hole. Work with a friend. Have him load your pistol, practice live and dry. Really effective rapid fire is just a string of perfect shots.

Do you have the Timer simultor program?

I use if for Dry fire/holster practise.

I have a target on the wall and turn up the speakers.

Eyes and Ears on............just like the real world.

The program has a "loop" and "random" function.

"Are you ready?"

"Stand by"

random seconds....

"BEEEEP"

Then after a period of time it starts again.

Great aid and it is FREE!

Looking forward to that :) I definitely need to practice my short shots, I rush them too quickly I think. On some of my targets, my groups at 7 yards are the same as 15 yards, only difference is the speed. Still a work in progress for me.

For sure, its kinda weird for me, my first shots are usually a little more trembly than others, but once a couple blasts go off, I find I have a 1 or 2 second window afterwards where my hands are pretty steady, those shots I find easier to hit the aim points. I think next time, I will only practice at close ranges, and not move out until I have a decent group.

Never even knew about it. I will have a look online for it tonight. It would definitely help since I can practice the drawing and sight alignment at home and limit my range time more to firing drills.

I wonder if I could somehow get that on my ipod...

too be honest,...I worked more on my accuracy when I attended a few bullseye practice nights in Hampton NB. I am still working on it as my sight picture indoors is sometimes off from my outdoor sight picture (due to lighting)

It is RUready.exe

I just searched and I cannot find it either.

Send me your email and I can email you a copy.

I just did that for Onagoth and it appears to have worked ok.

I think you're doing good...I remember your other targets in another thread, and this is a vast improvement. I wouldn't shoot against you for too high a wager. Keep it up and bottom line, have fun.:)

Thanks :)
Hopefully, by the time provincials roll around in August, I won't be so bad and can escape embarrassment :p

I might not win, place or show, but it will be a killer time, and thats pretty much my only concern.

Its kinda funny you make the reference about having fun, I have seen some trap shooters get very very pissed off at themselves when they miss, or when the callers aren't working right, and I always wondered to myself why they do it. Why shoot if your not having a good time.
