I'm putting new sights on my pistol and wanted to know what is a good average distance to sight the gun if I'm using it for IPSC so I will get the best coverage and still be in the"A Zone"

perhaps start at 5m, then as you move out to around 20-25m, you will magnify any sight adjustments that have to be made. You should take your time.

I usually sight in for 15m as the smallest targets (plates) are rarely placed further than 20m, and can't be placed any closer than 10m.

The short answer...lots of different taught about this......I use to sight the gun at 20 meters......but some match I went place small popper at something like 70 meters....then when I when to the national last year I was thinking long shot...so I sighted the gun for 50 meters.....well one of the stage were the target placement was 3 meters or less....cost me 2 No-Shoot...the gun was parallel to the ground aiming in the A zone....since I was that close I saw the problem and quickly fix it with -20.... :( mind you this is with a open Gun, now I sight at about 20 meters

small steel plates are most often found between 12 and 20m, so split that distance, and my gun is set for about 15-16m. This means that I don't really need to worry about trying to compensate for any shots until we get into the 40+m range, and those are very rare. Set it so you don't have to think about it for most of the shots, and just make a point of compensating on those rare shots.

Haha, I have a friend who, shooting open, wanted to be able to drop plates at 25m with a perfect shot, so that's what his gun was set for. with his old open gun with a high dot, there was a much greater paralex, so the poor guy had to mentally adjust for something like 80% of his shots, all in the name of not having to adjust for those (rare) 25m plate shots... He has seen the silliness of his ways now.

Set your signs so that you will cover most of the every-day shots without having to think about it, and also know how your bullets behave at extreme ranges, for when those targets appear in a COF.

So would it be better to set the sights for distance and then compensate for the short ranges ?

Hmmm...When I set my sights for around 15m, there isn't very much to compensate for at short ranges. At anything shorter than 10m, I'm mostly just point shooting and getting a quicky sight picture anyways. Good enough for combat shooting, but I'm not going to be "driving tacks" at that distance/speed anyways.
