Silent Rifle

Don't know but if the barrel is long enough the subsonic 22 rounds are very quiet. In a approx 30" barreled mini martini the loudest noise is the firing pin.

Can holes be drilled in the barrel of a 22lr bolt action in a way that will eliminate the gas expansion noise and use subsonic rounds to achieve silence. I would never attempt this, I'm just interested if its possible in theory. I read about this in a Tom Clancy novel and want the truth. Thanks for any and all responses.

22 subsonic ammunition can be fired through suppression devices and be quieter than an air rifle.

Anything mechanical you do to alter a firearm to be quieter is against the law in Canada.

"...Tom Clancy novel and want the truth..." Clancy's books are fiction. Good fiction, but fiction nonetheless. Just drilling holes will do nothing.

Discussing illegal activities is not allowed on CGN, even theoreticals.

any repeats can bring about a permanent ban.

Let's just list the most-acceptable legal choices?

Long barrrels [as HeadDamage had mentioned], subsonic ammo (or ammo with lessened charges, like some Aguila and CCI .22 loads, or personal re-loads) are all options.

Of course, a revolver-action, pump, bolt-action or the like would aid you getting to that next round...

There should be nothing "evil" about wanting a quieter load in-and-of-itself, w/o "naughty" silencers. Not to be preachy...

:)

I understand the position CGN has to adopt in this matter.... any illegal activity is just... illegal.
This discussion however, like many others, shed some light on the matter... I believe that defining the different aspects of firearms legality, especially in the "touchy" subjects, is beneficial in the long run.
One may decide to "push" these borders a little bit, and with no other reference but hearsay, it is quite possible to get over the grey area, without intent.

I think the matter of observing every last bit of legality but still achieving a lower report of the rifle is a very good idea. Some European countries have recognized the noise pollution factor for both humans and hunting dogs and took some steps towards legalizing suppressors, using subsonic rounds on a regular basis, etc. I'm not suggesting to encourage posting of illegal technical advices, but rather refine the details of what is legal and what is not, what is suitable and what not, educating most of us (including myself) on the matter.

Thank you.

I once owned a single shot english rook rifle and had it reamed out to 38 special.

With the full wadcutter 148 grain lead target loads, it did not have much of a report, from the 26 inch barrel.

Nothing illegal about that neat rabbit rifle. At 20 or so yards, one could casually shoot a half dozen snowshoehares with ease, before they would even think about bolting.

There is nothing illegal about drilling holes in your barrel, and nothing wrong with discussing it either.
It is a common practice with competition level air pistols, the theory being that it bleeds off the turbulent gasses while the projectile is still stabilized by the barrel. Unfortuneately, these holes will do the opposite of making your gun quieter....it'll make it louder. The "bang" is caused by gasses rapidly escaping from the barrel, and the gas is actully escaping earlier with the holes in place. Without the length of (sealed) barrel to allow the gasses to slow down, the report is louder. Same reason a short barreled gun is louder than a long one.

Now, if you want a legally quiet alternative:

CCI CB's.....29 gr. bullet at 750 fps, more than enough snot to dispatch everything up to a raccoon with head shots, and out of a long barreled rifle? Stupid quiet. Seriously stupid quiet. My daughters red-ryder BB gun makes more noise than a 26" barreled bolt action shooting CB's.

drilling hole's in a barrel wont make it quieter but on the other hand it directly effect's accuracy by controling exactly how much expansion of gas you are getting behind a projectile, if you look at it in term's of gas expansion in a given space you could calculate percisley how much pressure you want behind your projectile and cross drill at the correct mark on the barrel to keep velocity extreamly close and consistent but you lose efficency because you want to bleed off the gas just short of a full powder burn to make sure you always have the same expansion in the chamber....

PROBLEM WITH THAT IS!!!
if you change a given projectile's weight by a couple grain's you must re calculate, if you change the charge behind the projectile you must recalculate.... there are too many variable's and also safety aspect's to cross drill a barrel for the general public BUT if you shoot the same ammo thru a gun all the time and are anal about getting your velocity within +/- 5fps then go for it.... basicaly you would just be adding several inches to a very short pistol barrel to stabilize the projectile.... and if you ever shot a .22 with 3" barrel you know how loud the lil bugger's are ;)

eltorro, thanks for the support and the sage comments.

CB's are curious creatures; the shorts may foul barrels, while the longs perform to various degrees of quiet, depending on the barrel..

Doesn't sound like He's brought up anything Illegal to me. The law prohibits DEVICES that suppress the report of a firearm. To me, what he is suggesting, doesn't sound like anything more than porting a bbl and firing sub-sonic ammo.

+1 for ther CBs! They are surprisingly quiet even out of the 16.5" barrel of my Henry carbine.
